the toyota 4runner "highlander" is just another name for the 4runner sport edition, which is what it was renamed to in later years.

the toyota highlander is a whole new car. its an SUV on car frame, IFS and IRS. (independent suspension)

its more of a moms minivan than a offroading vehicle

but the highlanders v6 has 220hp!!

It got more because its built off the car platform as mentioned before and so they used a car engine. Its a carry over 3.0L unit from the RX300/EX300/Camry. The 3rd Gen 4Runner has had the 3.4L truck (ie taco/T100) engine which is an older design.

More hp and more torque from a smaller engine...

Umm, WHY?

Except Toyota used the same name for two different vehicles. They used the Highlander name on The 4Runner for a little while to "test" it on the public for the release of the Highlander that exists in the current vehicle lineup.

newer technology?

the 3.4 was made in 96, the first year of the third gen (correct me if i'm wrong on the year of the engine)

this specific 3.0 with 220hp was designed probably in 99 or 2000. much better technology i'm guessing

the 3.0 is vvti. i dont think the 3.4 is

The Highlander's torque while only slightly higher comes at a much higher RPM band. The 4Runner's similar torque # comes at a much more useful lower RPM range, espically for off-roading.

It's not about peak numbers anyway. I'd much rather have a "flat" torque curve. Especially off road.

narrow powerbands suck.
