What's a good setup for CB
#21
Okay so here's my current set up. Sorry for the quality of the pics
Here's an outside view of my truck - you can barely make out the antenna on the front passenger side
This is up closer and you can see I got the extra stuff to lengthen my Firestik
Into the cab we go...
...and another view from head on

ok so where are all of you guys getting your cobra's from? Because I just went to 3 radio shacks and they're sellin a basic CB for 60 bucks, without antenna. And I want to get the hood mount, where would/could I get all these things for a decent price??
Thanx

Mike at xtreme off road can help you out there.
I bought my CB from Ebay around $50 and all the Firestik accessories from a place called Alf Enterprises for about $60.
I don't know if I'd do business with them again though. They kind of forgot about me and didn't ship my items until I e-mailed 2 weeks after I ordered to see what was going on. I think Bob_98SR5 had a pretty good experience with them.

well i just bought one today at cascade cb up in lynwoodish. its near KKK (kompact kar korner) place looks a little wierd, but the guy is really nice. i got my cb for $60 and the antenna was like $18 or something like that. luckly i just happened to buy a 4runner with an antenna mount already there and the wireing for it too. but he charges $60 for instalation, but in my case it wasn't worth it.

Definitely not.
I got mine installed in 15 min.
Tuning, on the other hand...
I got a tuner from Radio Shack - I'll be headed out to an empty parking lot to tune my antenna after work today.

Guys,
I bought my Cobra 75 cb and 4' firestik from Mike at Extreme Offroad. Good guy. i also bought the accessories from Alf Enterprises and i had 2 good experiences with them.
I bought a hood channel mount but i recently mounted it on the inside of the rear hatch. I finished it this weekend and I'll post pics later this evening. The reception is not as good but as long as it works on the trails, i'll be happy with that. I'm not interested in talking w/ truckers at long distances.

I had it tuned a certain way but I'm going to retune it the way Firestik recommends. That and I just want to make sure cause I left the antenna on my truck and drove into a parking garage with a 7' clearance.
Missed the clearance by an inch and a little bit. Needless to say I'm glad I had a spring on there but the antenna was bouncing around every which way so I'm just double-checking. :pat:

Same problem... did you cringe when you heard that noise? I dont have a spring but I have a K40 which is alot less stiff than a Firstick... and yea I had to retune it... it made that tip loose... Like I have said in a previous post, Im an expert at tearing out the console where the radio is now... I think I tuned it the first time, then I moved it, then I went into a parking garage... had to then... so 3 times so far just on this rig... and Im sure it wont be the last...
that whole parking garage thing has me worried that if I get a roof rack.. well, im not going to remember its there... now that would be a horrible sound...

actually the sound didn't make me cringe...
Watching the antenna sway back and forth was a bit disconcerting but while I was moving under the concrete supports I was trying to time it so that one would hit and I'd make it past the 2nd one while the antenna was swaying back and forth.
I was on my way to a second one... timed it wrong and the tip got caught under while I was moving. I got a chance to see my antenna arch while I moved through. At that point I just pulled over and parked.:pat:
Yeah, I'm leaving the sucker off unless I really need it

I, too, have the Cobra 18 WX ST II and an obscenely tall 5 ft Firestik II. I just relocated my antenna from the hood channel to my new bumper. Retuned and actually got it down to just under 1.1 on the SWR on channel 13. Not too bad.
By the way, go to Radio Shack for an SWR meter NOW!!! I picked up a unit that was normally $19.99 for $3. It had been devalued.
I caught a skip yesterday from Texas and from Portland on Sunday. I've been able to talk to my uncle 13 miles away and reception was only slightly fuzzy.
My old Chevy had a Cobra radio, don't remember the model, with a 102" steel whip. Caught Florida on several occassions.

CBs still rule in the off road world, as most of us run big antennas (3 to 4') and can get out over 5 miles with a good tuned radio and antenna setup.
