What is wrong with my brakes?
98 4Runner, 225k miles.
Order of service:
1. Several months ago, I had a sinking brake pedal. Replace front pads and master cylinder. Bleed system, everything works great.
2. A month later, I go to replace my rear brakes (shoes and components). Do my drivers side no problem. Go to the passenger side and it is full of grease and gear oil. Determine it is due to the differential breather clogged forcing the gear oil past the seal, past the wheel bearing into the brake drum.
3. Do differential breather mod, clean passenger side brakes (don't replace), and drive 1,000 miles to see if oil is still leaking. It is.
4. Replace seal. Replace passenger side shoes and components, bleed brakes.
Problem:
When coming to a stop, the ABS engages from 2-0 mph. When driving a while, I smell burning at the rear drivers side wheel. I determine the shoes are too tight, rubbing against the drum causing it to heat up, and the ABS engages because the wheel is locked up.
I remove that drum (it was really tight), readjust the shoes. Back wheels spin freely. Go to test drive, same problem. ABS engages from 2-0 mph. No burning smell that I noticed this morning, but it was 55 deg out.

So you have rear Drum Brakes Your using the E-Brake to keep the shoes adjusted ??
Did you at least Measure the Drum size??
Then maybe the Drums were just replaced.
Is the emergency brake sticking on that brake
Either that brake is really about to lock up is it??
Or the ABS computer thinks it is.
Was the sensor damaged from all gear oil ?? was the wiring for that circuit damaged.
It is either a mechanical hardware type problem or Electrical in the ABS brake system.
Do you have the tools to test the ABS brake system??
Without being there about as good as it gets.
This is why I really hate ABS brakes.
