what is this and what fluid do i use?

as ii was greasing the wifes' 01 4runner, i noticed a few leaks. This one is a part that i am not familiar with. What is it called? Is it a transfer case? It is on the other end of the 1st driveshaft(not the trans side)

I am going to assume the top nut is where you fill and the bottom is where you drain.

Looks like the transfercase, top is fill bottom is drain. As far as the specs on oil I'm not sure what the wieghts are. Use the search and i'm sure you'll find it.

Transfer case, I also have a 01 and recently noticed my transfer case all of sudden got covered in oil like yours. I cleaned it with allot of degreaser and filled it up and in a month it looked like that again.

Long story short I had to pull the 4Hi/4Lo shifter out of the top and replace the gasket because it was leaking out of the shifter seal at the top of the transfer case.

So don't just fill it up and forget it, because with that much gear oil on it, its got a pretty good leak and if you just get into the habit of adding it oil all the time, one day you will forget and burn on the t-case $$$$.

It looked to be coming out from the fill and drain plugs. I would assume that they use metal washers?

how much work was involved in pulling the hi/lo shifter?

To pull the shifter out you have to take the plastic bezel out around the shifter between the cup holders and dashboard. After that just the four bolts around the shifter and it pulls out of the transmission. I would recommend getting a gasket from Toyota and putting some RTV silicon or some Toyota FIPG on the gasket.

Also be sure to scrap the gasket off, there was one member recently that had the same problem but had to do it twice because they didn't get all gasket off.

FYI, the gasket "oil deflector" part number (at least on my transfer case...99 Limited 4x4 with A340F trans) is 36345-35050
