My winter mileage has been awful this year, 14-16mpg... only hit 17 on a mostly highway tank.... and it's not even that cold. I swear they are screwing with the gas....

Over the last 10 - 15K miles, since I bought it.

'99 5-spd locker Highlander edition.

The higher mileages early on were with some very small tires the previous owner had fitted, so really, it's a higher *indicated* MPG. I forget the size, much smaller. Now I have some 31.5" Michelins on, which has dropped the indicated miles down.

Mixed city/hwy driving.

There's not enough room under the hood for the EPA (e.g.-The Ford Power Strokes have a radiator, intercooler, trans cooler, a/c condensor, and an oil cooler.)
18mpg

I hate you all. Even the folks with the superchargers.
265/70/16... 10-11MPG steady. Don't take it out on the highways much, but when I do, it's crawling anyway.
DUDE!! whats wrong with your truck? You should be around 18 ish with 3.4. Unless your towing?

I get 14mpg towing my 3000 pound camping trailer with my 01 3.4

A Prius wouldn't help either, they do the first part of trip with the engine running to heat it up so it's not constantly restarting a cold engine.
I would be highly surprised there is no kit to make a Prius a plugin, or to change standard programming and have it be purely electric for 2 miles.

Don't forget the power steering cooler. But ya if you recycled all the radiators from one of those trucks, you could retire.

Oh how things have changed...

...went from this:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/2...2245mi-235957/

to now getting 10mpg's city. No changes to the truck since the above post. Back then I use to get around 17/18 city. I could live with that but 10mpg's??

I'm disgusted with my truck right now. Full size Suburban's, Hummers and G500 Benzes are all doing better with 5 litre v8's!

I'm at a loss of what to do to change it. Put a new air filter in and dumped some fuel injector cleaner in. I'm NOT doing o2 sensors, plugs/wires, etc. none of that stuff needs or should be done.

Guess I'll wait till spring to see if things improve. Other then the fact that its cold out and I've been driving super short distances I am puzzled. I got 160mi from the last tank. I thought i had a leak or someone siphoned it!

You got to tell us how you did it. Thats better mpg then Toyota and the US government says that truck will get. Like 7 miles per gallon better. Thats amazing.

You really made then look dumb. They didn't post their results for how good your economy would be with your engine off coasting down hill.

Mine was getting higher 'indicated' MPG when I first got it and it had 245's on it too. Smaller tires = more rotations per mile = more miles on the odometer. Higher *indicated* MPG's, but not necessarily better actual MPG.

Same is true with oversized tires. There's some actual efficiency loss, but a lot of the drop in indicated MPG is just due to the drop in indicated miles.

okay so I did a few things to increase my old post saying I was getting 14mpg. ( it was also winter time) but anyway since then I gave it an oil and oil filter change, new air filter. Oil filter was fram and air filter was fram, oil was quaker state 5w30. I took out the MAF and sprayed it until it looked clean with electrical contact cleaner. I did a welfare version of the ISR mod, I basically plugged all the silencers and except the really big one because I didn't or know how to deal with the vacuum lines that went into that one. I did a different version of the elbow mod, I made it so the elbow that connects to the air box was not connected to the pipe that is bolted in the fender, basically i pushed it over so it wasn't aligned and connected any more and is now side by side, see pic below
I am running 265 tires and even though the tires say 35max psi on the walls, I filled them all to 34.5, pulled the efi fuse for 30 min because I'm not sure how long it takes to reset. (actually does pulling the efi relay reset the car's learning computer or does pulling the efi fuse do that? ) ** someone please tell me if its the fuse or actualy EFI relay i have to pull out** thanks

Anyway so far I am recording 19 mpg IN CITY driving, with lots of stops and goes, keeping the rpm's under 2500k.

with no scientific proof, I am guessing that the oil change, air and oil filter change, plugging up the air intake to give it a better direct flow, modifying the elbow so that it isn't restrictive and still takes in less hot engine air than no elbow at all ( assuming its colder in the fender), cleaning the maf and setting the 34.5 psi on all tires and driving under 2500rpm has helped a lot.

NOTE: I don't have a roof rack on or brush guard or anything like that on the 4runner. In fact I think people who claim they get 25mpg is crazy bull, especially if they have a roof rack which is proven to get you less mpg.

roof rack only cost me about 1/2 mpg at most, even with stuff in it.

The ethanol content in the gas has more to do with fuel economy nowadays than much of anything else.

lots of little things like you mentioned in above post really do help though; driving habits make a huge difference. Hilarious though is my truck with the SC and alky injection, the more I punch it the better it gets! but I'm going thru more methanol too so it's not all free...

my taco with bigger tires and steely wheels are still ringing in a good solid 17-18mpgs....

Now, getting 25.9mpg, from all my testing, is basically impossible unless the roads are 100% flat, no lights, no traffic, speed is around 45-50mph, weather is right (75-80F), A/C off, etc... it's likely because your tires are undersized that you aren't getting the correct measurements.

New personal best for me on a pure highway trip, 10.66 L/100km or 22 (US) mpg. very proud of that. Average speed 70mph (indicated).. windows open, A/C off, warm weather (75-80 F), 32psi in the tires.. hilly highway driving, little stop and go traffic. I had my bull bar and roof rack on as well.

So your saying your truck gets the same gas milage weather your stop and go, or cruising. I dont see how, especially when nobody else's truck does that. 22 is possible highway, but theres now way your getting 22 in the city. Come on!!!
