14.3 city/highway.
All stock with 265/75 BFG

I live in Santa Barbara and everything is 10 minutes away and everywhere you go you hit 10 stop signs. Don't really have time to cruise on the 101 before I get off.

I got 200 miles (Orange County to SB at 70-75 mph) to my tank when I got it last month before replacing the plugs/wires and after p/w I am getting the same mpg on SB city streets.

I pound the miles here, about 75% freeway, 25% city and avg 19-21 mpg on the 2.7 auto. All Amsoil...I was hoping for better mileage, some of you V6'ers get better mileage than me...got 117k miles now, at least I don't have to change timing belts.

 

I get bout 18mpg with 70% highway and 30% city with in between driving. not too crazy but not granny style either

 

That sounds a bit too good to be true.
Why would your mileage go up in the mountains?

I get about 17-19 city and 20-23 highway and depending if you baby it.
I have never seen anyone get close to 25-27 MPG except downhill, but it is not impossible.
If so 27 MPG is definately the exception and not the rule.
Let me know your secret if you do.

 

Since I put on the 285s I know my gas mileage sucks as I have to fill up about every 5-6 days and all I do is drive back and forth to work about 50 mile round trip each day. If I actually took the time to calculate it I think I would :cry: It's hard to put a $$$ amount of looking "kewl" though!

The "kewl" factor: I was driving around this weekend buying Christmas presents and some dude and his dudette in their 4Runner, stock, were opposing me (going the other direction) in traffic and turned left at a light in front of me and I thought they were both going to break their necks rubber necking, admiring my rig. The dude actually missed the turn lane and hit the curb in his turn! My wife even noticed it too!

Vtek (Vtec) is a joke from the Honda world. Since most engines are tiny they cruise at 3000+ RPM An auto with 4.10 gears on stock 265/70/16 should be a tad above 90mph @ 2800.

 

19.5 Here, mostly highway miles

 

I was getting 20-22 with stock tires. The change to cold weather here plus new 265/75 X 16 tires with a more aggresive pattern has gotten me down to 16-18 tho...

 

Glad somebody posted this. Makes me feel better about my poor mileage.

When I bought my '99 last year (then stock) I was impressed that I was getting 20mpg on the highway. A full tank was good for 300 miles of "goin' down that long, lonesome highway."

Adding the supercharger added another 1mpg.

Then I changed my 265s for 285s and ... YIKES!

I realize that my mileage isn't accurate now, but I can only go 200 miles on that same tank of gas. Depressing, plus it means that my wife has an excuse to go to the bathroom yet again.

Has anyone done the math or compared a 'Runner with 285s and stock gearing to see just how far off the bigger tires make the mileage? Some of you engineers could certainly pull out your slide rules and figure it out, right?

(and don't you younguns say, "What's a 'slide rule', dude?" :pat:

 

Somewhere out there(try tire rack and such, I think 4wheelparts.com might have it) is a calculator. It will tell you the percentage difference between diameters. If you went from metric to standard like me, it also converts that for you. Going from a 225/75(about 28 inches tall) to a 31 puts me off roughly 10%.

19 mpg Highway

 

Our VTEC Accord runs 3000 RPM at 80MPH. And it runs 2500 at 60.

My 4Runner with 4.10's runs about 3400 at 90 MPH.

Is there that much of a diff between the 5 speed and Auto?

 

If my math is right it should be like this:

Auto
Gear 1 - 15.9 mph
Gear 2 - 29.1 mph
Gear 3 - 44.5 mph
Gear 4 - 63.2 mph

Manual
Gear 1 - 11.6 mph
Gear 2 - 21.6 mph
Gear 3 - 31.0 mph
Gear 4 - 45.7 mph
Gear 5 - 53.2 mph

Based on 4.10 and slightly less than 31" tires, everything @ 2000rpm.

According to that website, going from the stock 265/70R16 to 285/75R16 means that my speedo is clocking 7.3% slower than I'm really going.

Considering my trip back from Kansas City this past weekend, that means that my 75mph speed on I-70 through Missouri was really over 80mph. No wonder "Lurch" sucks gas at highway speeds!

You don't know a high strung engine/rpms til you've driven a Type R;my roomates blown '00 at 60mph/5th gear is near 3500 and at 100mph it's over 6k;great for the road course,bad for long trips.

 

15.5 combined 75% highway, 25% city
Highway at 78 mph (Indicated 72 mph)-3050 rpm

'99 5spd, 76k miles, 32x11.5 Dueler MT's, 4.30 gears

I'm going to 285's soon, so I'll probably be able to count my gas mileage on my fingers. My '00 Z-71 with a 5.3 V8, 168,000 miles, auto and 285's gets 16.5 no matter what speed you drive. It's hard to believe that it gets better gas mileage than my 4Runner. I can barely get 200 miles per tank on the 4Runner (that's indicated-actual would be about 217 miles per tank)-and at about 1/8 tank left.

Oh yeah, I know about the gearing and revs on Type R's. Unfortunetly, Honda decided to gear the 5th gen Accords for the elderly.

 

Usually during the week I get 18-19 and highway is usually 19-20. I drive quickly on the interstate so that's why there's not much diffrence in the numbers. Tires are 265 B-Revos, S/C and TRD exhaust.
