WHat does this mean?

hey all, quick question for ya...a couple of times over the past two weeks the shifter would not shift out of park when starting up. i know how to get it into gear by using the little clip switch, but what is causing this and is it gonna be big $$$$ to fix?

interlock
There is an interlock switch on the brake. It won't shift out of park until the brake pedal is depressed (or you use the bypass switch).
Maybe the switch has gone bad. I wouldn't think it would be too expensive.

Are they putting the interlock soloniod at the shifter on the toys?
The GM, the soloniod is at the column, and the asain GM, its at the shifter.. If it is at the shifter, we comonly see buildup from spilled pop and sorts causing it to bind when cold(loosens up when hot)

I had mine apart to clean it up and it was a real fiddly to get the shifter knob back on it took a couple of attempts to get iut right and as crash said all it is is a little solonoid that holds the shifter button from engaging and the little red button is just a link that pushes it in .i say whip it apart and have a look see and a clean and then if that fails then go to the stealer.
