Charcoal canister is the sqaure box with two round circles on it. It filters gas fumes from the gas tank before releasing them into the atmosphere. Normal sound. Usually sounds like a buzzing.

The part to fix it has been discontinued but TRDparts4U (that's his YT name) found me one. He can probably help you out too.

In the 01 and 02 4runners the charcoal canister was moved to the rear right above the spare tire. The pulsing noise your hearing is normal, there is a valve that opens at idle and other speeds intermittently for emissions control.

The noise is normal and unless you have a check engine light, don't was the $$$ replacing the canister. What the old saying don't fix it when its not broke.

I'd like to get one. I don't care about the noise but people are constantly coming up to me at work telling my truck is making some sort of "shorting out" noise. (my parking spot is in the parking garage right by the door)

i guess that it must not be the canister... it is a pretty loud ticking noise coming from the eng. fuse box/ brake fluid area this sound cant be normal.

The valve that controls flow to the charcoal canister is right in the area by the battery and fuse box and when its open at idle makes a rhythmic ticking sound that changes speed with the engine RPM.

This valve is a electronically controlled solenoid valve and you can unplug it to confirm that is what is making the noise.
