Water in intake?

I should probably post this question to a different forum since it's not my vehicle that got water sucked into the intake, but a friend of mines Jeep Cherokee. I thought you guys would know the effects though.
He went through a puddle that was a bit to deep and water got sucked through the intake, it stalled, he let it sit for a while and let the filter dry a bit, when he tried to start it, it blew some water out the exhaust and seems to be running fine since. Just wondered if it was harmful and in what way?
Thanks,
-Bryan

Most of the time if you injest water, you should pull the spark plugs and check for water.

See what just happened to PoBoy on ODW's forum.

Here is how it all began.

A snorkel is very good insurance against this from happening.
Some might now care for the "bold" look of them, but I think it makes a rig look very boss.
Better to spend $300 for one if you wanna play in the water than spend 10x for a new engine later on.

Yeah that isn't good, A friend of mines 93 4Runner went through a deep water pit, He didn't think it was as deep as it was:rolleyes: He sucked water into his intake and tried to start it right back up and his motor locked up. He has to get a new motor for it, it's almost been a year and no new motor

You should do like Corey said and check the plugs, he might not have sucked much water into his intake and just mostly in his exhaust pipe. He is lucky though

It's not neccisarily checking the plugs, but pulling all the plugs, and then cranking the engine, which will allow the water to shoot out the spark plug holes. Best thing to do, if you stall while going through water, is to immediatly pull the plugs and crank it. DO NOT try to start it up without doing this first. Buddy of mine made this mistake on an ATV. He stalled in what was pretty much a lake. The whole ATV was underwater. Then he got it out, and it wouldnt start. He cranked and cranked and cranked for days. Finally got it started, but you hear the internal damage from miles away. Turned out he ingested tons of mud and water. Blew the engine.

My son drove his Toyota through a "puddle" (honest dad!) and sucked water into the engine. He managed to drive it home, but head gasket blown between #3 & #4 and #3&4 rods bent! Water does not compress. I thought he might have only blown the gasket, but saw those 2 pistons did not come up to top dead center when we had the head off.

Good luck.

its called "hydro locking" your engine. wat happens is that water gets into your engine/pistons. when the engine compresses the gas, it attempts to compress the water as well.... it being that water cannot be compressed, your connecting rods break and ur engine seizes. not good. time for a new engine!!!!

next time get a safari snorkel!

Sounds like he was pretty lucky then because the engine is fine, I guess it wasn't enough water to damage it. Thanks for the replys.
