If you can't afford the fuel mods you can't afford a SC IMHO. Or I'll put it this way, you can't afford the engine damage.

still sort of lost thinking about air filters. i figure if i am going to do an exhaust upgrade i want to do air filter as well. i havent heard great stuff about K&N so anyone else have some idea on filters not as high maintenance but a filter that will be an upgrade.

thanks -matt

Just do the "deck plate" and "elbow" mods and keep the stock air filter in place. Save your $$$ for fuel mods, seriously the SC will force the air in just fine. You need more fuel, not air. I run 10+psi of boost with the stock air box and filter.

I agree with mt goat as well on the fuel upgrade since you have the s/c, but honestly, to get the most of what you have, fuel management and proper exhaust flow are important. I have DT headers and love them (minus the PITA install...). Further back than that, be careful as to not get too big of exhaust piping. Too small or too big, both hinder the overall performance of your engine. It all depends on what you want to do first I suppose. Spending money on that s/c, you'll want to get the proper fuel mgmt with it though...

Does anybody know how much horsepower the stock injectors are rated for?My stock integra gsr injectors can handle right at 300 hp. So is the 7th injector really a must have. Do factory supercharged trucks come with the 7th injector kit?

As far as I know there weren't any 5VZ trucks from the factory with a SC. The SC was an add on thing and some dealers may have added it on.

More info here:http://www.gadgetonline.com/Super.htm and here http://www.gadgetonline.com/Fuel.htm

Quote from the 2nd link:

I sent one of my stock injectors to RC Engineering and had it flow tested. It flowed at 238 cc. That means that when locked full open it will flow 238 cc of fuel per minute. Locked full open is 100% of its duty cycle. The maximum recommended duty cycle of any injector is 80%. This is the industry standard to prevent erratic injector operation.

I used the fuel flow formulas on the RC Engineering web page and computed the max HP for the stock injectors out of my truck. At 80% duty cycle they will support 198 HP and at 100% they will support 247 HP. The 198 HP seems real bad and the 247 sounds a little more acceptable if the ECU will run the injectors at 100% duty cycle.

At the very least make sure its been setup using the "Free FMU mod" described in that 2nd link and in the new SC install instructions. If you need the new SC install instructions they can be found online here: http://customtacos.com/tech/index.php?article=45

Doing the "Free FMU mod" will increase the fuel pressure as you increase in boost pressure.

Unfortunately the Jardine exhaust is discontinued for the 96-02 4Runners due to lack of demand. However, I picked up a 99' Tacoma Jardine full cat-back exhaust from URD when they were on clearance a couple of months ago for $79 bucks! I then took it to my local exhaust shop where they modified to fit my 4Runner. I paid $60 to install it. So I got a $300 exhaust for about 140 bucks installed. Call up URD and see if they have any more of these cat backs sitting around.

I also performed the deck plate mod with a K&N drop-in filter. The full K&N CAI is rated at about 8 hp gain. I probably picked up around 5-7 with just the deck plate and free flowing filter and it only cost me around $60, which is alot cheaper than $300 for the full CAI.

Texas Ace had some interesting dyno results here comparing a stock air box to a "CAI": https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/t...begins-146485/

Maybe the results would be different for a non boosted engine, but clearly the normal mods that people do to increase air flow for power become at best insignificant with a supercharger or as in Ace's tests actually decrease HP.

Then there is also the possiblity he is has already boosted the air intake to a lean condition and adding more air just makes it worse.

I think anyone running an air metering system that uses a MAF (mass air flow sensor) is asking for trouble using an oiled air filter.

Do you know what the mods that were done to this exhaust? I just picked up the same one for my 98 and now I just need to find someone to put it on! Any help would be great! thanks

The jardine system is just a muffler with 2.25" pipe, mandrel bent though...

Install it yourself; it's pretty easy.

But I bought the exhaust for a Tacoma, and I have a 4runner, it should not be a problem to fit right?
