Im waiting to see what becomes of the factory switch. If that falls through then Ill be the first to put the other switch in. Allied electric, the place that has the switch, has a store here in Denver so I can just go there and pick it up.

Easy there Texas! That should give you plenty of time to get everything ready so that when it arrives, you can just plug-n-play, and then tell us all how to do it!

Hey guys - I've been following this thread for the last 2 months --- nice job of sleuthing out the wiring. I had an incident that forced me to contact toyota factory and passed along our collective disliking of TRAC. Surprisingly, the rep that i was dealing with was quite helpful. She suggested that if more people were to contact toyota directly, the factory might make a solution for us!!!!!! Wouldn't that be cool!!!
I suggest that everyone take the time to write and/or call and ask for a factory TRAC disable switch or at least directions to it properly.
CALL: TOYOTA MOTORS EXPERIENCE 1-800-331-4331
follow thru the menus to get to a rep (I talked with Barbara) and ask that your request be documented.

Here is an exerpt from the letter I sent ---- i apologize for the length, but you will appriciate what happened.
Jimbob ---- over.
I wanted to restate my concerns about the safety issues involved with having the TRAC and VSC systems disabled by such a trivial thing such as a loose gas cap. I can understand the need to comply with emission standards, but to disable drive systems for such a simple user error? OK, it is effective and solves the problem, but there should be some type of documentation in the owner’s manual to alert users of the reason for the combination of warning lights coming on. The only mention of a loose gas cap triggering warning lights I could find is on the gas cap itself – and it makes no mention of which warnings should light. I myself never thought to link CHECK ENGINE, VSC and TRAC warning lights (all three at once) to a gas cap malfunction. A blinking LOW GAS light would seem to be much more logical.
As far as the safety concern, I was quite astonished at how much tire spin occurred while driving to the dealership to address the warning lights. Wet, sloped freeway entrance ramps proved to be quite scary without TRAC assistance (supercharged model of course). I can only image horror of snowy and icy roads without TRAC – and it is conceivable that many gas cap malfunctions would occur in colder weather when people are in a hurry to fill their tanks and the caps are not closed properly to three clicks. This is just my opinion for an easily remedied problem.
Thank you for your help in addressing my frustration for the $100 charge for having the dealership tighten my gas cap.

Thought I would pass this along to the factory also -----
Many 2001 and 2002 4Runner owners (my self included) would like to be able to deactivate the TRAC system on our vehicles. We are satisfied with added security of the TRAC system in daily on-road driving, but there are off-road instances where it would be useful to be able to disable the system to allow continued wheel spin – deep mud, snow, loose sand, any of these on a slope. Not to mention it is really fun to be able to throw rooster tails when the situation is called for and safe – that is what four wheeling is all about! (and two wheel for that matter). The inability to deactivate the TRAC system prevents the inherent fun associated with these vehicles. Please reference the following web site so that you may see that there are many owners that would like to have this option.

It would be nice if Toyota factory would step up and create a kit for allowing us to deactivate the TRAC system safely. We have all concluded that the option was available on the 2-wheel drive models but not the 4-wheel drive models. We were hoping that a simple wiring harness splice to a (hopefully factory 2-wheel) switch would be possible. At the very least – a factory tech bulletin to tell us the safest way to accomplish this without damaging our vehicles.
PLEASE HELP US EXPERIENCE OUR TOYOTAS THE WAY THEY ARE MEANT TO BE!!!!
Thanks.

North is now south and east is now west, and the temp is now in C instead of F...Any reason on why that happened? I didn't mess with anything that came close to that...I am making a Homepage right now so i can post up how i wired it and post the 6 pages on VSC/Trac/LSD in the Manual. I am waiting for my buddy to send me the pics and video we made and took of the process and the fun afterwards but i should have it by the end of the week. Believe me i would not pull one over on you because i hate VSC with a passion and would not want someone to toy with me on a way to rid my self of it. Yes if someone can let me e-mail them the videos i will do that because i don't think i have the capabillity to host them. I am downloading the video's on my friends Apple because i have no software for videos on my windows. Thanks guys

My truck is in the shop
:Well somehow the way i wired my harness to over ride the VSC/TRAC did work...HOWEVER..it shorted out other electrical devices and some ECU. Here's the situation. Me and my buddy's were out four wheeling last thursday like we do every now and then when i decided to go through a large puddle. Well it was deeper this time than last time, apparently some bigger trucks had come and rutted out the hole...I didn't know that. I gunned it and flew through the puddle and halfway through my truck hydrolocked and shut off
My truck has been in there since thursday and so far the cost tally is up to around $1500 that i have to spend.....Everything else is under warranty. I am not sure what all is broken or damaged yet but they say they will keep me updated. So i'm pissed. I think i can deal with the VSC/TRAC for awhile unless there is a full 100% full proof plan that you all are sure will work. Here's some advice to anyone who wants to try and wire up there own system but is not sure it won't work. DON'T DO IT! Wait till someone who knows 100% what they are doing does it and test it to make sure it's full proof and works. LaterBrendon

Jimbob,
Thank you for your contribution as well as your time spent contacting Toyota. While my pessimistic side thinks that Toyota will simply ignore this request (lawsuits), one never knows.
Heck, they did issue a bulletin addressing the damned DRLs.
