Trouble Starting

I had a problem a few weeks ago with my '01 4runner not starting. It would turn over and never start. I had a mechanic look at it, and he thought it was the timing belt. He said the timing belt looked brand new. After putting it back together it started. Occasionally it will take longer than normal to start, but it has always started. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might need to be checked? I'm afraid I am going to get stranded again.

What shape are the spark plugs and wires in? Any work done right before this started? Also, carefully check all electrical connections and ground wires. All tight? No corrosion?
Check all the vacuum lines for cracks, etc.
