my major headache is that the carrier thing for the spare is siezed on mine. I've tried all available fluids, so I pray not to get a flat...(that did it i'll get one on the way home now...). I think my next step will be to cut the cable and replace the assembly with a new one.

note to all to avoid this siezing problem you should exercise the thing at least twice a year. Lower it /lube it/raise it.
If the previous owner had done this I would'nt have this problem. Cheers Aviator
If the '89+ are like the '84 -'88's that I've owned, then there are a couple of bolts above the cross member to access in order to drop the entire assembly. Then you can either pry it apart and lube it or replace. Those chains rust up quick. I've had to do it to every one that I've owned.

Good luck and thanks for reminding me to drop mine down again soon.

yeah I was helpin a friend change a flat on thier mini van and I noticed I had no jack, stupid me. I had gone as far as to even drop my spare and check the air to make sure it would come down if needed. I keep a lil floor jack in a plastic box in the back now. It lifts prob 20" off the ground maybe a lil less.

What kind of floor jack do you keep with you? I need something and I'm still not sure what to get.

The 89+ use a similar set up except its is a cable not a chain. and with the tire stuck-up I can't reach the cross member to unbolt the fool thing. all i can do is cut the cable and replace the whole damn assembly. Unless somebody here has a better idea... aviator

Mine was too short as well. Someone mentioned that they went to the dealer and they said they never heard of it, the dealer I went to said they knew about it on the vehicles with the bigger wheels like my LTD. I now keep 2 pieces of 2x4 plastic "post" material (Used for signs basically in place of wood) right under the rear passenger seat in the little nooks. Fits perfect and seat still closes.

Same setup here (sold a 2004 dcab TRD) and NEVER had a problem w/ the spare tire. Came off easily, jack and lug wrench worked great... No complaints.

the jack was found useless on my 2000 taco sr5 and even more so with 33 boggers so now i just keep my high lift tied up in the back and and use my sliders for jack points .

and for a back up a lowes 20 ton bottle jack ia also kept with me (great for helping with putting beads back on and straightning out metal using weight of the vehicle ! )

I had a similar problem with my 90 (2wd). The jack was too tall, I couldn't get the friggin thing under the frame so I couldn't jack the truck up to change the tire.

Anyone out west interested in making a few bucks?

If you can find me a non-rusted spare tire lift (all the parts - the gear box, shaft, pulley, etc) for my '93 4Runner, I'll be happy to comensate you for the time it takes at the junkyard...
