Toyota Emblem on Tailgate

The O in the TOYOTA emblem on the back of my tailgate needs to be replaced. The chrome surface is peeling off. Does anyone know how to remove these safely without damaging the paint, and how to re-install properly?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick response, what kind of chemicals are safe to strip the residue? Will "Goo Gone" work?

Goo Gone works good to remove the sticky residue-remove as much as possible with fingers

just do not over do the Goo Gone and wipe off immediately with lots of water.
