Had a trip planned this weekend to go snowmobiling in Michigan. All the guys bailed on me and now I'm gonna go solo. This means I gotta pull the trailer with my 4R instead of buddy's 2500 diesel. The trailer weighs about 1300# and the sled weighs about 450#. The 4R is a 97 w/123k with a spankin new timing belt and water pump.....Do you guys think I will have any problems pulling a 2 placed enclosed trailer....400 miles each way?

You shouldnt. I recommend a transmission cooler for towing but you wont have time to install one. But less then 2000 lbs wont be a problem at all...I've pulled twice that amount 550 miles a few times with no problems...

 

The V6 equipped 4Runner, is rated to tow 5000 lbs. I know several people that have towed that, and more, with no problems.

According to my '97 owners manual, trailer brakes are required over 1000 lbs.

And a sway control device, over 2000 lbs.

 

Ive towed my 2500# popup a number of times with 2 dogs, gear and wife in my 3.slow equiped runner.

doggy, but had no problems.

 

I towed my pair of jetskis regularly so I wouldn't expect you to have any issues with what you mentioned.

 

Ditto with my old '90 3.slow and now with my '00. And my trailer weighs 2800# empty and I usually load it with wood and gear plus load the kids int the truck. Just don't expect any land records going up hill.

 

Ive towed 3000#s quite frequently.

only problem is I have to go back to work after the weekends over

 

And BTW, I was still towing 3000# with my '90 3.slow with over 200,000 miles on the odometer.

 

My '02 3.4 has pulled a 3500 pound boat and trailer many times with no problems. Granted, it's not a speed demon, but it gets the job done. If you notice the tranny shifting in and out of OD a lot, turn the OD switch off and let it rev. The vehicle is perfectly capable of pulling that...you'll be fine!

 

So you're looking at roughly 1800lbs? Yea, your rig will do just fine. Be careful with braking until you get used to it, but your truck should have no problems with that light of a load.

The 4R made the trip...but it struggled quite a bit on the way...I was driving into a 22+ knot NW wind the whole way there and went thru 2.5 tanks of fuel in 330 miles! The way back with no wind was much better.
Overall I'm glad I went....but I sure do miss Diesel Power when towing!!!

 

WOW that is a lot of gas. I have towed 2 sleds many times (open trailer though) and got 16-18 mpg. Towing my 80 Pickup (on 38's on a trailer...) I didn't use gas as fast as you did.

How fast did you drive and how hard do you accelerate while towing??
