Took the door off my 3rd gen.

Well, finally gut the runner back in action. I had to change a CV, and I really only worked on it for a few hours a week. (Yes, it took me that long, I've never done one before, and I had to wait for parts.). But, finally finished yesterday, so I decided to pull off my driver's side door, and cruise around. The door is easy enough to come off. All of the electronics unplug on the inside, and then there are 5 bolts, 4 for the hinges, and one for a plastic thing. Fairly easy, just get a buddy to hold the door for you once it's off, it is pretty heavy.

Also, before you unplug all the electronics, make sure you don't have any windows down that you don't want down. The window switches on the other doors will not work, neither will the power locks.

Ohh, and the usual. This is not a good idea, you could be ejected from the vehicle in an accident, I would not reccomned riding around with no door. Also, it is illegal in the people's republic of New Jersey, and probably not a good idea anywhere else. Also, don't smoke, yes that is a cigarette in the 2nd pic, but it's not lit.

Let me know what you think.

I think it's just the crappy camera phone pics. I did have an accident on rt. 18 like 2 years ago, but all the body damage has been fixed since then. On a Jeep, you can hardly notice if the doors are off, on the 4runner, you can definately tell it is missing something. I got a few weird looks while driving, but it is nice driving without no door, real paramilitary look, and a nicer view.

Yeah, I figured I'd get that, like I said, it definately looks like there's something missing. I'll probably keep it like that until I get in trouble, I like driving around without it. It's really just a holdover until I find some doors to make half doors with.

Looks good! You're right it is more dangerous. But keep in mind it's still way safer than a motorcycle (not to knock the bike guys, I used to have one myself). I think all vehicles look better and are more fun without doors. you should make them "quick release" to make your life easier when it rains or gets too cold. Have you considered some custom tube doors? That's usually cheaper/ lighter/ more fun than a half door.

i think it looks good! my buddy is running door-less in his 2nd gen and it make such a difference when wheeling to be able to see outside. and with 4 bolts and 3 wire harnesses at most to remove its not that hard. is it just the drivers door remvoed or is pass. side done too

You can tell in the pictures that the passenger side door is still on the truck.

It looks cool, but I wouldn't want to drive around with it like that.

I don't get it....why do that to a newer 4runner? If i still had my 91, I still couldn't see doing that. Maybe to a 1st gen or something...I guess to each his own.

the reason jeeps can do it is b/c they have a 'lip' near the bottom that makes sure stuff doesnt fly out. Im pretty sure its illegal on any other vehicle that doesnt have that.

Since I got the newer Ford, and a nicer car, this truck has slowly turned into my beater. It has scratches all over it, dents and dings everywhere. It is sad, that this is a '01 and Ive seen '81s that are nicer, but whatever, just something to cruise around in for the summer, plus it is still fun and reliable.

Kinda sorta, the Ford is registered to my dad, who I work for, but it is for all intents and purposes for personal use as well. I drive the Ford most of the time being it is the newest. My g/f used to drive my car, but we broke up, so my mom has been taking it lately, she has an older car. And the 4runner was supposed to be my DD when I bought it 3 years ago, but it is no longer, it is just as bad on gas as the 250, so it sits most of time.

Well shoot...I'll buy it for $50 if you want it as a beater!

make sure you turn off the dome-light, or you will wake up with a dead battery

I think when you unplug the wires that go to the door, it will also unplug the dome light on the newer vehicles. However, I am not positive with the Toyotas, that is just experience from other ones.
