Tire upgrade for '03's?
Well, after driving a Limited this weekend I placed an order. I'll have the first and only rear air suspension car in the Pacific Northwest. They weren't ordered due to expense ($1,400 MSRP). It includes the X-REAS shocks, though, to soften the blow a little.
Anyway, to put things in perspective, I've owned every gen 4R since they were first produced. Also several FJ100's (still miss my '99 with locker), and Sequoia (what was I thinking?), I'm not going very far out on a limb to say that the '03 4R is the most significant SUV Toyota has ever produced, in a class by itself and better than Land Cruiser FJ100 IMHO. Note that it's built in the same factory (Tahara) as Land Cruiser and Lexus LX/GX.
Still, it could be even better with proper tires. I'm no big off-roader, occassional forest service roads and mud slogging around Northwest Oregon. Can anyone suggest a tire upgrade from the current 265/65R17 tires using the same 7½" rim? One still acceptable for on-road duty most of the time, but with a more off-road orientation and still fairly quiet. Looking around Tire Rack shows it to be an odd replacement size, important to maintain, I think, for calibrated inputs to all the ECU sensors throughout the drivetrain.
