So here is my situation. i just got my first 4runner and i am loving it, but the tires are in need of replacement, and i havent much money. My shop teacher recently gave me a set of takeoffs from a wrangler. They are 225/75r16. they are in good shape, and free, so i am thinking, sweet, i have tires, and they are free, who cares if they are a little smaller? Well today i was talking to a friend, and he says he has a set of tires from his blazer, but isnt exactly sure what he has. they are either 33 x 12.5 r16s or 32x12.5 r16s. and he would give them to me cheap. is there anyway either of these will fit on my runner without lift? if not, are there any huge dissadvantages to the smaller rubber? thanks alot guys.

What year and type of Runner do you have? The tire sizes you mentioned will not fit a 3rd gen without a lift. The largest tires that will fit without a lift or major cutting are 265/75 16's ~ 32x10.5 16's. With a 3" suspension lift and 1" body lift, some people are running 285/75 16's ~ 33". With that said, I wouldn't run the smaller tires either because of the change in gearing. Were your stock tires 265/70 16's? If so, I have a used set with about 10-15K left in them I'd sell cheap. yeah, it was late when posted that, so i forgot a few things. I have a 96 4runner, stock, and yes, the stock tires are 265/70r16 s. Emptypockets, what kind of tires are they? That would be awsome, except i live in sacramento Ca, but i guess they could be shiped, i just dont know how much that would cost. If i do run the smaller tires, it would be just for a little while. I am in the process of selling my old truck, so when i sell that, i can get the right tires. I am just itching to get out on some dirt, and i dont think my old bald meats are going to cut it. the new smaller ones are only about an inch shorter, so i dont think the gearing is actually that big a deal. and swapping tires isnt a big deal either, i am intern at a local shop, and have access to a tire machine, balancer, and well, the whole shop.

I don't think it'd be worth shipping them, they're too far gone to be of much use long term.

i decided to just mount the free smaller tires today until i have the money to get new tires. They look pretty good on the runner, a lot more agressive than the bald micheleins that it came with. the size isnt notisable, its not realy andy shorter, maye a half inch, but they are considerably narrower. thanks for the help guys

I didn't think those smaller tires would fit the rims that your stock tires were mounted on. It would also throw your speedometer off...

I wouldn't skimp much on tires. For the price, check out the Firestone Destination in both LE and A/T. They're about $95/tire in my neck of the woods and are comparable in performance to the ~$150 Bridgestone REVO's & Michelin LTX's I had and they wear as well if not better than the REVO's.
