When the timing belt on my Mitsubishi DOHC turbo was replaced by the dealer on a recall, the new belt had a very loud whine. I checked the tension, and sure enough it was much too tight. Adjusted it correctly, and the loud whine was gone.

I am not familiar with the tensioner on a 3.0L so if it was just spring loaded, then make sure when you did it that you did not add any more "extra" tension on top of what it provides (like using a prybar or something like that. If your tensioner is hydraulic like the 3.4L then I would do as suggested and check the idler and water pump for wear. The idler should spin smoothly and the water pump should not rattle or have any play in the shaft when it spins.

I used to work with a mechanic that seemed to think that the spring style tensioners didn't provide adequate tension before tightening the lock bolt down so he used to use a pry bar as I mentioned and I can't tell you how many customers came back with bad timing belts shortly there after. I watched him start one car and it almost shreded the belt on the spot. The other problem he'd cause was premature failure of the idler and waterpumps. I used to just shake my head when I saw him do crap like that.....
