Hello, I have a 2000 4Runner with approx. 127,500km (approx 80,000 miles). Timing belt & waterpump were replaced in February 2008 at 96,715km (approx. 60,000 miles). Although I haven't had enough mileage for timing belt replacent, but my dealership has suggested me to replace the timing belt again during my recent oil change since it's been 5 years. I just don't know if it is needed and your input is appreciated. Thanks,

 

There's no reason to replace the timing belt/water pump if they only have 20,000 miles on them. I'm pretty sure the recommended interval is 60,000 miles for the timing belt and water pump. The fact that your current timing belt and pump are 5 years old makes no difference. Unless they saw noticeable wear on the belt/pump, that sounds to me like a stealership recommendation. That service isn't cheap and I wouldn't be quick to do it if my current stuff was in fine working order.

 

I am going on 15 years and it hasn't broken yet. IMHO, there are more items to replace for preventative maintenance if you want to spend that kind of money.

But my belt is not subjected to the hash cold found in Canada ( I am guessing since in Km)

 

I read this thread ...https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/h...ng-belt-55233/...and decided to wait until 10 years and 120k miles. The belt I took out was in perfect shape. Truth is, these belts last forever and mainly die due to problems in the WP, coolant leakage, tensioner or pulley failure, etc. Time on the clock has not been an issue, and certainly not at 5 years. Recommended mileage on a 2000 is 90k, it was 60k on earlier years ('98 and down, I think).
