i've done that a few times.

With the straight pipe, don't you get a CEL? Not sure but that is what i was told.

What would be the negative effects of running a straight pipe VS. a CAT?

Yep, I had to get one already, my 2001 ECU didn't like having just one aftermarket cat. http://www.urdusa.com/product_info.p..._id=1230100014 Works good, not one P0420 since.

given that thief cut the flanges off... surely theyll know my new one is aftermarket...right? Or should i well a ring to it and anchor it with a cable (that way they will need pipe cutters AND a cable cutter)

Well not only do thieves suck, California sucks. My cat was stolen yesterday. What I found out is that in CA the 3.4s on a 96 & 97 are not allowed to have an aftermarket cat. We are required to have a factory cat, and I verified this with CARB (California Air Resource Board). Damn law makers. Here's where I get lost, the 3.4s on the Tacos and T100 can have an aftermarket cat on the same years but no 4runner unles it's a 2.7. Go figure. Now there are recertified cats, but starting July 1, 2008 those are going to be stopped and it will be a dealer part only. I'm looking a $750 installed for a recertifed cat and I paid $155 after tax for the rear O2 sensor.

Sounds like it would be cheaper to leave California. I moved away from San Diego in 1991 and haven't looked back.

The thought has crossed my mind a few times. It's getting to the point where it is not really reasonable to live here. More laws and higher prices on everything.

It is a fantastically HORRIBLE drug. Why people WANT to do that to themselves, I have no idea. Crack is all over this country.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's where a lot of the "tweakers" unload the stolen cats. You should be allowed to run a blade through someone who you catch stealing parts off of your car.

Well to follow up, I dropped off my 4runner last Saturday. I was told they should be getting a recertified cat on Monday. Well, I took the family to Monterey for the weekend and came home Tuesday night. Needless to say, still no cat. Called Wednesday and same result. Finally on Thursday a cat came in. So, replaced cat, new O2 bung, some piping and a Magnaflow 18" and I was only raped for a measley $1000. I guess the next question is, when do I get hit again?????

Really, were they the Toyota type with 2 studs or the universal type that screw in?

When I was doing a new exhaust system I had to salvage or make them from scratch because no one sold them. Even the dealer didn't have them unless you bought the whole section of exhaust pipe from them.

It was the 2 stud piece which holds the factory O2 sensor. The dealer told me the same thing, it comes in the exhaust pipe.

Wow, how much? The muffler shops here looked at me like I was crazy. I made one from scratch and refurbished another one.

Looks good, hopefully you'll get to keep it for a long long time. Oops, I just noticed they used lock washers instead of lock nuts. Might check those from time to time.
