What/how should 4 low function?

what speeds it this gearing for? Does it shift thru all 4 gears normally (in an auto trany situation)

pls,keep in mind, I got my '98 TODAY. Bare with me!

4 lo generally is used when you need maximum traction. It is used at very slow speeds, something like less than 15 mph. For example your climbing a semi-steep slope with rocks and other obstacles, you would want to go slow.

If you look in your owners manual, it should give you the max speeds in each gear, 2 hi, 4 hi, 4 lo.

4 low is for running the motor in its happy powerband at very low speeds. I use it thru 3rd gear, if I need higher speeds in 4wd I shift from 3rd low to 2nd high in one swift motion while moving. That's about the same as 1st high to 2nd gear high. However its not possible on the newer 4WD systems. On the new stuff you have to be completely stopped to get from low range to high range.

You may find people writing about crawler boxes, Marlin cases or dual / triple transfer cases. These offer low range and ultra low range. Its used for driving over terrain that is shaped like the St. Louis Arch or the Empire State Building while not bogging down the motor into RPMs that are too low to be in the motors power range.

The manual says it's for maximum traction, but that's a little misleading. If it's for maximum traction, then logically, you should be using it in the rain, snow, etc, on the roads. But that's not the case. Really, you should only use it when off roading.
