Last week I noticed fluid leaking from the rear diff housing of my 97 SR5 4Runner. After some investigation, found a pinhole leak (rust-through) at the rear/top of the housing, just to the side of where the brake line bracket was formerly tack welded. With 200K miles on the thing, I figured I'd try JBWeld and it seems to be holding.

Now, there is substantial rust elsewhere on the rear of the housing. What would folks suggest to try and stave off further rust-through leaks? Por15? Smear JBWeld on the whole thing? Something else?

Clean with a wire wheel in a drill, weld the spot thats leaking closed and paint with a good rust preventative like rustoleum. I like por15, but gimme a break-I painted all kinds of stuff with rustoleum that sits outside like lawn equipment and it doesnt rust.

 

x2....that area around the brake line bracket is a common rust through spot....I would just fix it and slap some Rustoleum on it and call it good

i was thinking about doing a heavy coat of herculiner or something
idk if that would work
