I am planning on installing my newly aquired Taurus fan this weekend. I went to my local auto parts store and picked up an adjustable thermostatic fan controller. It comes with a 30amp relay built in. Most of the info I have seen shows people putting up to a 85 amp relay, is this necessary? or will the setup I bought work on its own?

 

You got the fan with 3 terminals on it? I would get the bigger relay, at least for the high speed. They draw a lot of amps.

It is usually from a Taurus with the 3.8 engine. There is one in the junk yard near me......hmmmmmm

 

I have only used the low speed setting with a 25 amp fuse with no overheating problems even with A/C. For what it's worth I went through 2 of the adjustable thermostats before switching to a 185 fixed thermostat.

Why did you go through 2? How were they failing?

Those adjustables aren't cheap, that would suck to keep having problems with it.

 

I went through a couple of them as well. I am on the same fixed 185* as I last swapped in last year. The fixed ones are reliable, why they are more reliable is beyond me. I have a spare fan that I am going to install into my 87 this weekend hopefully.

 

So now I am thinking I should return the adjustable one. I really liked the idea of being able to adjust it--especially when wheeling in the hot desert.

 

marcP -the guy who replied to your pirate post included a link to just wire up the higher power line and let the sensor adjust fan speed.

 

Fan is installed--pretty easy too. The hardest part was attaching the fan to the radiator. I did it without removing the radiator, but I think it would have been easier if I did. I have it set to come on at 185 degrees, and it stays on all the time with the a/c on.

After I get some miles on it i will give my opinion--so far its great.
