Taco/3rd gen cruise control/tranny advice?
Hey all,
I received an email from a gentleman whom I just met on a recent wheeling trip. He has a new d-cab TRD 4x4 V6 Taco with auto tranny (of course) and he doesn't like the way the tranny/cruise control performs. Here is his email:
So are there any tranny or cruise control modifications he can do? He mentioned to me he tried adjusting the cruise cable to no avail. Money is probably not too much of a concern.
Thanks,
Steve

...As I mentioned, the cruise control makes me crazy. It is entirely too sensitive. At the slightest load, it immediately unlocks the torque converter and going up grades as light as overpasses, it both unlocks the torque converter plus jumps to third. Going 60 plus, this makes the engine roar which will scare the crap out of you with a slight case of freeway hypnosis plus everytime the torque converter unlocks, the gas mileage goes down drastically. Going to Reno, I only get 16 because the torque converter is unlocked 75% of the time. On the flat, it gets over 20, a lot of time up to 24. I have an Avalon and the cruise in it is perfect.
Thanks,
Steve

Check out Level 10 . They do some work on solving known transmission problems. I am eventually going to have them rework my valve body to get my D-cab to shift more "positive". The transmission has a "luxury" style shift that I do not like.
Also check out Gadget's write up about transmission mods.
I hope this helps...
By the way... I am supper happy with the cruise control on my D-cab. It is the smoothest system that I have ever used. It does not even feel like you took your foot off the gas. I have not noticed the problems that are plagueing your friend. I do however, have a supercharger to provide some extra power. This may prevent it from downshifting on hills.
Does anyone with a '01 or '02 'Runner have any cruise control complaints? I understand that they get the same tranny as the D-cab.
