Swapping Original 1997 3.4L 4runner Engine For JDM

Hi, I am new to the forum. I've been trying to find my answer to this question on google for the past few days with no luck; I was hoping someone has had past experience or just the knowlegde I am lacking right now. Anyway. My truck has just been diagnosed with having a blown head gasket and was told that it's going to cost around $1600 dollars to fix. When I told a buddy of mine about this he mentioned something about buying a jdm engine and just swapping it with the old American one. Before I purchased the engine I wanted to know if you would have to buy something special to fit it or anything else that I should look at before doing so.. I drive a 1997 2WD Toyota 4runner with a 3.4L V6. Thankyou so much and sorry if this post has been somewhere else on the forum I just couldn't find it.

I just had back surgery and don't have the tools I was also hoping to just buy the JDM with the lower miles for a longer life. I am just not sure if the connectors would be different or anything like that.

If you want to get a lower mileage one then i'd say go for it, it will tell you on the site, if not you can ask them, they have done the swap before.
Walts, there are a ton of threads on here on what engine swap is pretty much drop in for the 3.0, which is the 3.4. That being said, if you're driving through swamps try looking into a snorkel too

You will likely have to swap the oil pan and pickup, wiring harness, etc.
The sensors should be the same, but the harness wiring / ecu will be different, you will want to re-use your existing harness on the new engine. Should be a simple plug and play otherwise. The JDM engine might have EGR... you can block that off if yours doesn't.

with "JDM" engines, you are just using the Long block. So just the heads with block. You reuse your intake manifold, exhaust, and all of your sensors/injectors/ harness/ ECU.

Ohh see i didnt know that, the JDM motor i helped my buddy put in (300zx TT) came complete with harness and everything. We only had to change two sensors over from the jap motor to american versions.

Its easier to reseal everything while you're at it. Valve covers etc. One the 3.4 the exhaust manifolds are slightly different and the harness vary year to year. Sometimes you get a motor that has been sitting for a while so the injectors are stuck shut. Not a bad idea to send out your injectors to get professionally cleaned. Injectors are a different style from 98 on. California spec vehicles are different on thier own with sensors and wiring. So It can all vary.

Are you planning to replace the USDM 5VZ-FE engine with a JDM 5VZ-FE engine? or is it from the USDM 5VZ-FE to the JDM 1KZ-TE/1KD-FTV TDI engines?

One of the differences will be the harness because the the JDM ECU is located on the left side so the JDM harness may be a bit shorter. Also, the wiring attached to the engine bay fusebox will be shorter because in the JDM unit, the fusebox is located on the right side.
Also, as previously posted, there are differences in the ECU/wiring from year to year.
You might like to refer to www.toyodiy.com for the part numbers.
It would also be better if you get the engine that comes with a tranny to make the replacemen simplier. But before installaing, replace the tranny shifter with the LHD version.

Now if you're plan is to go the TDI route, there is a sop in Texas, that will supply the engine and do the installation. I forgot the name of the shop but it's in this forum. Just search using 1KZ-TE engine swap.

Ok OK, he just wants a JDM 5vz-fe.

Use YOUR CURRENT harness and ECM, YOUR CURRENT oil pan and pickup and YOU SHOULD BE FINE. Keep all your sensors just in case the JDM ones don't work properly.
