Swapping a 96 5vz for an 03

Hey gang. Recently purchased a 96 4runner to replace my 92. The 5vz in the 96 is pretty rough so I bought an 03 5vz from a tacoma out of a junk yard. Obviously there are more electronics on the 03. Any advise on what roadblocks I'm going to run into and how to get around them?

I'm pretty sure engine management never really changed. I know the MAF sensor got repinned around 98-99, but I'm assuming you'd be reusing your original MAF so that wouldn't be a problem.

Put them side by side and swap all the ‘96 stuff to the ‘03 motor. Since it was a junkyard motor and not a half cut you won’t have the luxury of the harness and ECU from the ‘03 to upgrade. So you need to look at this as a long block swap.

Yep that's what I was thinking. The block and heads will go in and everything else will have to stay. It looks like most of the electrical clips are the same. The throttle body is different so the old one will just get bolted on.

i did a '00 into an '02 recently. The evap and egr systems are routed a little diffently, id suggest using the entire '96 intake plenum as its vacum hoses will be aligned with those older designs. I used the '00 and still troubling shooting a p171 evap error and a an apparent pcv system blockage. These could be unrelated to the swap and were inherited from before.

The result

The swap was easy. All the clips and plugs from the old harness were the same as the new sensors. Used the 96 intake manifold and planum so there were no issues with the vacuum system. Sort of. On start up had an uneven idle and che CK engine light. The valve right below the throttle body had filled with gunk and wasn't closing all the way. Cleaning didn't help I replaced that valve and everything is good now.
