Sun roof doesn't open '99 4Runner

Today I tried to open the sun roof and it didn't move. I can hear it but no motion to flip up or slide back.
How bad is pulling the headliner? Are there serviceable parts in there i.e. Plastic gears to replace or am I looking at swapping the whole unit?

Better it is closed then open and won`t close with the rain coming .

I was never very good with head liners not enough patience if I got it down it was in no condition to be put up again.

Have you looked what parts you can get??

Looking at prices for parts I hope You get lucky and someone is parting out what you need.

Being of somewhat sound mind and hating sun roofs, as they are a breakdown waiting to happen. I had one on a Mini I owned. So I must ask you these questions......Was it hot out and in the sun? Have you kept the tracks well cleaned and greased? Is the gasket around it in good shape or rotting a bit? Heat will expand the glass believe it or not. Mine would not open in the heat or full sun, and if it did, I had to wait until sun set to put it back down. keeping it clean and well greased is another reason it will not work. Also the gasket around it will slowly start to disintegrate over time and exposure to the elements. Lucky it's stuck down.

This is a new to me vehicle. The driver's seat needed work as well. So I wouldn't be surprised if this has been non-functioning for some time.

fierohink...saw this the other day. You might find the part about how to get to the motor in post 1 useful, looks like it's easy and without any headliner dealing with.

I have not (yet) had to deal with your issue so I can't tell you how it all goes together. Here's to it being something simple and cheap!
