Stock Tires

i got my 2002 4runner back in late june, and of course it came with the stock goodyear wrangler rt/s tires. i think the size is 265/70r16. anyway, i just hit 16,000 miles and the tires are starting to look pretty worn. mostly on the edges, it's all smooth. not bald, but way more worn down than i'd expect from so few miles.

i was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? i drive kinda fast and on freeways very often. i go offroad a lot, but have stuck to the moderate stuff so far. some mud, some rocks, mostly sand and dirt. i've rotated them every 6000 miles and kept the psi at the recommended level.

not that i'm complaing...now i get to get some new bad ass tires i'm going for the wrangler MTRs, those should be fun.

If you have that much wear on the edges you probably need to air them up more. If you place a line of chalk across the wheel and drive forward you should see an even amount of chalk removed - if the center is darker then air up a little. You can also do the same thing driving through some water and looking at the tread mark you leave.

I'd go 265/75r16 next time. Slightly taller but the same width.

It may pay to get the alignment checked.
Excessive (more that a degree) toe-in tends to smooth the edges of a tire the way your talking about.

I had those Goodyear Wranglers on my Tacoma too, stay away from all of those Goodyear tires. I put Michlen LTX/MS on 70,000 miles ago and I still have plenty of tread left. Plenty of people have made great comments about those tires, you can't go wrong with them. Smooth riding and long lasting. The all terrain version of the same tire is really good as well. Hope this helps some.
