How did those shocks work out Jerry?

 

I put 130 pounds in the back and it keeps the back end from really hoping but I don't think I want to haul it around all the time. I might put the old stock shocks back on and see if that helps.

 

Do you think it's the shocks? I was thinking the springs.

I had 400#, but without a good way to hold the weights, they become projectiles in a quick stop of accident.

I'm going to put the old springs on with the new shocks when I get the chance.

 

my ome springs are soft, and they are the 891 (stiff 3+ inch lift). I dont know what could make the ride so rough, or else you could be use to worn out stock suspension...... i have a feeling its the shocks. and like brian2sun said i have some old ome comfort rear shocks ill part with for $15

 

I was going to take the shocks off the bottom and see how it bounces. I'm thinking too it's the springs. I did pick up a pair of used shocks to try.

It would almost be easier to change the springs, the shock towers are a pain to get to.

 

I never thought so. I can get a ratchet on top. its a five minute job

 

What is the chance that the brand new shocks could be bad?

 

The new shocks didn't seem stiff. In fact, they didn't seem as stiff as the KYB's I took off.

I'm thinking more the springs could be wrong/bad. The folks at ARB said they are spec'd at 30 #'s heavier than the original equipment.

It sounds like need '99 rear springs.

 

So did you guys get any improvement in on-road ride with switching out the rear shocks or springs?

I've got the OME 881/890 coils with the Sport Shocks and have about 6k miles on them - mostly highway driving over the Summer for some expedition travel out west. The set-up does fantastic off-road, but on-road it exactly as has been described. I find myself having to constantly apologize for anyone riding in the back because it's so damn bone jarring back there. Front isn't as bad. I also have load range D tires, but run with 30psi. I will say that the truck handles great on smooth roads and the ride is nice and firm with almost zero body roll.

I really need to do something for a more OE ride and would like to keep the current lift height.

 

I bought a pair of used N86C's from another member of YT, they seem to ride a little better.

I'm going to look for a set of '99 rear springs, that was suggested earlier.

At this point, I believe there was a misunderstanding as to what I wanted for a ride. I too am happy with the lift, but I was looking for better ride quality. Surely someone makes a spring with a bit more height to make up for the sqwat that will come with a softer ride? If not, this may be my way to early retirement!!

im sure your springs are not that stiff. I have an idea. take you shocks off and drive it SLOW because it should be way squishy. Try it out

 

I've done that. There is a fair amount of bounce without the shocks. I just talked to ARB, they want me to check the part number on the springs, there's a chance they are the heavier spring.

 

Anybody else remember that we aren't driving cadillacs? Try going 209k miles on stock suspension, then switch to 891's and new shocks...rides so much better. Anybody complains to Me riding in the back will be walking.

My 891's feel great compared to the bumpstops and shocks holding all the weight from before. Want a fix? Put a couple tractor weights in the rear...or a full tool box, 12" subwoofer, amp and a camping chair.

Or just have toyota dealership replace the springs with oem and get a spacer. I'm still amazed how many people complain after replacing shocks and coils with OME.

 

Im likely going to be looking at Getting some softer springs. My runner was a turbo set up and the guy I bought it off of said it had "turbo hd axles", nowhere on this site or others have o heard of that, but it must be cuz my ride in the rear (no lift or mods at all) is like have no simuspension at all...

 

Just an update on my OME experience.

I talked to Nils at ARB Off-road, he sent me a new set of N86C's. They're not as stiff as the 60027's I originally tried. You can still feel the bumps, not as bad as the 60027's though.

I would like to commend Nils and ARB for doing what they can to make it right, I would recommend them for great customer service.

If you don't want the stiffness get the Eibach progressive springs. They adjust to weight Emus stay the same all around.

 

Did you ever try any of the new comfort shocks (60028)?

I think I had asked about a progressive type spring and nobody seemed to know of anything.

ARB suggested I try the N86C's. They are better than the 60027's, but still stiff.

I can't afford to keep changing out shocks and springs. If I knew it would help, I would try one more set of something, but I can't financially justify experimenting.

I know it would be tough and subject to personal opinion, but it would be nice to have a reference (sticky?) for springs and shocks. Something with load capacities and weight/lift capacities. Maybe it is out there somewhere and I didn't find it.

I'm thinking I just need to chock this up to a lesson learned. I can't blame OME/ARB, they helped as best they could.

 

I have heard that the 60027 are too stiff and make for a harsh ride. The 60028 are suppose to ride much better.

It's the shocks, not the springs!

 

Were you able to get the N86Cs that I sold you warrantied?
