stereo in a 1st gen?
im new here, i just purchased an 85 runner, and it have no apparent sound system. Driving without music can get old fast, whats a decent priced way to get a stereo in there and is there a write up anywhere? I prefer to do mods myself.

I just got a Pioneer Premier head unit, its got the flip down face and cd player, it was about $160. Then I bought two pioneer premier coaxial speakers, they have the built in tweeters, and those were I believe another $60. I had Cartoys install the headunit, then did the speakers myself, which was easy as finding which wire is + and which is - and hooking the speakers up. No required.

Yeah, actually when I bought the truck sound only came out of the left speaker... Some times. And the radio barely got any reception whatsoever. I got the new stereo a month after getting the truck...
Now I sometimes like to turn it off, slide my rear window open and just listen to the motor reverberate through the bed of my truck as I go through the gears.

first, welcome to YotaTech. second, nice rig.
the biggest choises in selection is going to be preference, and after that, it will be $$$. in my toyota pickup, i have a pioneer head unit, running to a crossover, to a 300x2 amp, then finally a set of 8" components. it sounds great in the pickup, but horible in the big blazer.
so in there i am fond of mt Xplod head unit, too pioneer 3 1/2"s, 6 1/2's and then to 6x9's. granted, this setup isnt as loud or have as much bass, but it sounds better and clearer. i recomend going to your local Circut City and just listening too all the different speakers, and then selecting a head unit that you like. if you plan on adding amps or subs later, make sure you get a head unit with preamps. it makes life a lot easier.
this probobally didnt help much, but o well.

Definately a nice rig! Where's the post with bigger pics?
One big thing you should do is bring some cd's with you when you go and listen to speakers. I listen to techno so low and high notes are my necessity. Some other music requires a nice mid-range. So find the speakers that suit your music style or styles.

That is one of the cleanest looking 85 4runners I've seen.
I have an 88. It came with a decent Pioneer head unit, but still has the crummy stock speakers. I bought 2 pairs of Polk car speakers on eBay- 6" 3-ways went in the doors and and 6x9" 3-ways that went in the panels next to the rear seats.
If you put speakers next to the rear seats, make sure you can still fold the seats down- mine just barely clear the speaker grilles.
The sky is the limit as far as car sound systems go, obviously, you will be limited only by how much $$ you have.

i wish it ran as clean as it looked, needs a new radiator, fan, smog work. But i faith and willing to wrench at it myself, already spent 5 hours putting new carpet in the front of it. Yea any writeups on installing stuff like headers, radiator, fan would be much appricated, where should i look for them?

Wow you might have just changed my mind about my paintjob... I wanted to go with blue, since I thought it would look better than the black like I have right now.... but wow.... I may have to keep the truck black.
Do you have a haynes or chiltons manual for your 4runner? If not get one! That should help with some of your maintenance ?'s. Oh and if you need a new fan, consider a taurus fan! There's a writeup in the tech section for that install.

but with a body as clean as that one, it is worth it to put a little money into it. the radiator i did an R&R in less than 15 min.
drain the radiator, undo the 6 bolts holding it in place, and remove the hoses. lift straight out. take shroud off of the old radiator, out it on the new one, drop straight into place. replace 6 bolts, reattach the hoses, fill with fluid. thats done.
for the fan, just search for taurus, and you will get a lot of help.
