Steering Rack Replacement

I took my 4runner to the dealership yesterday to get my 90k mile tune up and i finally got them to look at that ripped CV boot underneat th eleft side of my car and it had been leakin power steering fluids and everything and he said the wax seals were broke? He also tried to tell me that i would have to replace or rebuild the entire rack to fix the problem and i wouldnt be able to just replace that single part..that would cost anywhere from $750-900..is the dealership trying to just rip me a new one or is this the truth? i really cant afford this right now so any help would be appreciated

you can either replace the rack or re-seal it. I believe couple of ppl on this board re-sealed it themselves.

rebuilding= replace the seals. this might be a better route for you. check around your local shops.

the dealer quote sounds about right.

ya dealership just replaces it they don’t fix it. I needed new bushings on mine and they wanted to make me buy a whole new one. So I bought after market bushings for 16 bucks and fixed it my self

i think the reason why it is so expensive because the parts have a huge mark-up. I noticed this couple of yrs ago when i wanted to go w/ oem parts for my camry and ended up getting autozone stuff instead.

however i stick w/ oem parts for my honda, much cheaper than toyota. hondas around my area usually have 15-25% off online coupons for parts and it helps a lot.
