Very sweet links guys!
For $13 I can't afford not to do this.

Does anyone know if part # 8.10101 will fit a 01 Prerunner taco? I checked out ES's website and it has the year up to 2000 and only specifies a part for the 4wd trucks. Hopefully the frotn rack and pinion layout has remained the same

Doug, yours looks exactly the same as mine when I checked it. If worse comes to worse, you are out $13+shipping and you can sell it here on Yotatech.

By the way, I charge $65/hour in labor.

I paid $13 plus shipping from http://www.suspension.com/.

I have an update on this from my side.. I can't get the top 19mm bolt (on the 1/2 doughnut) loose on the rack. sigh. I couldn't even break it loose with a 3' piece of pipe... I really need to invest in air tools some day.

I also don't have the right sockets for the bolt on the left side. Based on another thread, I bought 21mm and 24mm sockets (and a nice new 1/2" ratchet!) but it's something larger than 21 and smaller than 24. (anyone know for sure what it is?) And come to find out I need a deep socket for the down-facing bolt. So I have to head back to the store - but then there's still that top bolt on the right side.

I've moved on to my rear axle for today looking for a trashed bearing!

Mark-

Are you talking about the bolt on the upper far left in this picture? If so, that doesnt need to come off. If you are talking about the second to last bolt (with the red bushing) on the left...well I thought that was a 19mm? I don't recall using any fancy sized sockets or wrenches to get my rack loose.

If you are still having problems after this post, I can stick my head under and have another look. I have found it best to buy a bunch of sockets in the general size range then just return all the ones I did not use. It seems to save a couple trips to the store (I just went through this the other day with this project Celica I have).

Yeah, the one on the left with the red bushing - not the huge one at the upper left. The ones on the 1/2 doughnut are 19mm, and I think the down-facing one is 19mm, but it's gotta be a deep one (I don't have a full set of deep sockets). On my truck, the left one is definitely bigger than 21mm.

Don't sweat it Christian - I'll get 'em out of there! Besides, I can't get the top bolt of the doughnut free, so it's a moot point to worry about the size of the left bolt.

I just pulled the rear axle and am trying to replace the bearing (without a press!) so I'm done with the front-end for today. It's cold outside - I have to keep coming in to get feeling back in my fingers.

Thank you!

Cool. Let me know if there is anything I can look at or whatever for you. Sucks that that top one is jammed on you.

I think you are right about the deep socket. I remember using mine now that I think about it.

I've been putting this project off, due to a cold and the desire to work on my fj40 instead. The plan is to let Mark work out all the details so it'll save me trouble when I do it. Thanks Mark!

heh... well, my luck didn't change any yesterday with the front-end. I do have a trashed rear axle bearing though, sigh.

I knocked out these bushings tonight. All I can say is wow what a difference. All of the slop is gone in the steering, and I had a little bit of shake in my right front wheel that I'm not feeling anymore too.

I replaced mine yesterday, what a biatch! Things were actually going pretty well, thought I'd get it done in a bit more than an hour, till upon reaassembly, or should I say, my attempt to reassemble. The kit I got from Total Chaos as a raffle prize for the Moab 4runner jamboree had some issues, namely that the two metal sleeves included in the kit were too long. This prevented things from going back together right, and trying to get the new bushings back out without tearing them was tricky. I ended up have to take a knife and angle grinder to the old bushings to hack all the rubber off and grind bare, then use those with the new bushings. All in all, I think it took me about 5 hours. The steering wheel feels a bit better, but it was too late at night to take it out for a real spin.

I tried (again!) to do mine on Saturday - I still can't get the top 19mm bolt loose on the half-doughnut bracket, and I find that I now need a 22mm DEEP socket as well. argh.

oh, I think ti's mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but if you have a diffdrop, you'll need to undo it to get the bolt out on the left side. ARGH.

SHOOT! I knew I was missing something- I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get that long bolt all the way out- DUH! That gave me a ton of grief. Mark, FYI, I used a 7/8" socket to get out the the 22 mm bolt, it didn't slip at all on me though it wasn't a perfect fit.

Mark, for that top donut nut, is it just not budging? I used a breaker bar with a 12" piece of pipe on the end of that, and got it to move. Have you tried the obvious- PB blaster soaking, even a little heat (without heating up the rack)?
