Speedo cable noise

Hi all.
I have another noise coming from my beloved 4runner. It seems like I have a ticking noise when I am driving. I disconnected the speedo cable from the tranny and the noise is gone. Should I get a new cable, or find a way to squirt grease into the old cable? How easy is it to remove the whole cable?

I have a noise that seems to be coming from the gauges too...I was thinking that it might be the speedo cable. I'll be watching this thread closely!

I have a strange vibrating noise coming from the instrument cluster (I think) between 1800 and 2000 RPMs.

I recently replaced mine. It was ticking at first, then started squeaking!! I ordered a new cable from TOR (on these boards - I think it was $60 shipped) and installed it with the help from a buddy. Its not too bad to install.

I have an 89, so not sure how different it would be on newer models.

My noise only occurs while driving. It's a noise within the RPM range posted above. In fact, I can hold the accelaration steady at 1900 RPM and make the noise occur until it goes away after about a minute. When accelerating through the 1700 - 2000 RPM range it will make the noise as the tachometer goes through this range. So, on heavy accelaration the noise is just a blip as it quickly passes through this range.

Mine still does it but only when its cold out...now that the temps are startin to come up it only happens once in awhile, once it starts squeaking and ticking all the time then I'll replace it but not til then.

I figured that replacing the cable was too much work. I took apart the cluster and sprayed some cable lube into the speedo cable and low and behold the noise went away. Been quiet ever since. You can get the lube at any motorcycle shop. If you do want to replace the speedo cable though, I have a brand spanking new cable that I can sell you. If you want it, just let me know.
