new guy here, so go easy eh? i could not locate a "search" function.

I have a 99 Tacoma V-6 with what I believe is the 3.4 L motor. During my 30K tune up I was only able to find single electroid plugs at the auto parts store (kragen) for the truck. The ones that came out and the sticker under the hood state that a double electroid plug was required. I took them back to the auto parts store and had them recheck the computer and the single type plugs came back as the ones. I installed them with no ill effects as I could determine. It even passed Cal smog testing recently.

Now I'm upon my 60K go through and still am having trouble finding the double electroid plugs. So questions are as follows, is this Toyota's way of getting you to buy plugs from the dealer? Has anyone else run into this, and if so, have you run the single electroid plugs? I usually run platinum plugs in my newer vehicles. Copper in my 78 flat 6. Any plug recommendations?

I will save my K&N filter question for another time. Thanks in advance for any help you might provide.

hehe I believe alot of guys would agree with me and say they run the OEM plugs..i believe are denso??? i've also heard there are some NGK plugs out there? others will chime in..good luck!

 

Both NGK and Denso make OEM double electrode plugs. They are a longevity thing, since there is more wear surface, they take longer to wear out. Can be replaced with single electrode plugs just fine. I use Iridiums, NGK BKR5EIX-11, and they work quite well.

Any NGK retailer should be able to get you the factory BKR5EKB-11 (3967) dual electrodes. Also several people on Ebay sell NGK plugs, just give them the specific part number and they'll quote you a price.
