so my transmission died...

Lee, what gear were you in when it all of a sudden lost power on the highway? 3rd? OD?
In any case hopefully you'll get it torn down and tell us what actually happened.
......cause inquiring minds want to know.

if youre planning on doing a teardown+rebuild to as new condition, i wouldnt sell it. i'd swap it back into your truck. at least you'll know its rebuilt and good to go, as opposed to running an already used one, which you may or may not know the history, maintenance, condition etc of it.
just my opinion...

took the bad transmission to my friends garage and we opened it up.
OK so first we took off the bell housing and the rear housing and removed the torque converter.
as you can see there were metal shavings all over:
look how much the magnets in the pan attracted:
the filter...
then we got to the overdrive planetary gearset:
theres the problem... the source of all the metal:
broken thrust washers...
shavings everywhere..
took my anger out on it with a sledge hammer
my friend derek made a good observation:
"I bet the main failure was from the thrust washers which allowed the overdrive planetary to move front to back in the casing."

I guess there's no chance of getting your rebuild now
That is cool to see the inside like that.
I look forward to seeing where you find the best place for a replacement. Mine did the cold weather "no-go" again yesterday and I tested it to see if it was a rear break drum sticking. I'm not that lucky.
I wonder if it is something occasionally blocking the filter, but its just a guess.
Whatever causes my stalling is bypassed when I shift down to 1st gear. I don't know why that would be, since I assume the transmission would already be in 1st gear, but it gives me hope that I could flush it and possible remove the culprit.

i think you have to be a member to get to the forums, but reading these will be worth it.
if you have multimode (99/00 limiteds and all 01/02 4WD's) then you could have this issue since you would have the same A340F transmission as the 00/01/02 Tundras. however, it seems to be the 01/02 runners and especially the 00/01/02 Tundras. i guess the 4.7L power in addition to towing is what makes the issue more pronounced in the Tundras, but it was supposedly due mainly to a design change in those applications. that would explain why the 99/00 runners don't see the issue, but the 00 tundra does, and then the 01/02 runners are also seeing the issues.
