Those are called gum plugs, they are the least reliable type of plug you can use in today's standards. They work fine for ATV's because 1. ATV tires are not street legal 2. ATV's are usually slower than cars, and they drive on dirt. (did I say they are not street legal) The only thing most tire shops use those gum plugs for is a tire that is not DOT approved, such as golf carts and ATV's or wheelbarrels etc. They are not garunteed to stay for long periods of time and quite often start leaking again after a while.

I shake my head reading some of these responses from you guys that use all kinds of crazy plugs 2 inches away from the bead, and give this kid advice to follow you. Just because you limped home on something, or managed to "get by ok" with another thing doesn't make it fool proof. There is RMA and DOT standards set for a reason, and it is not foolish to beleive that his tire could very potentially seperate if it is fixed. Whether he wants to take his chances with it or not is up to him, but please don't give advice for people to ignore all warnings and do as you do, let the kid make his own decision. We told him it could be fixed if he really wanted to do it, and warned him of the possible hazards if he does fix it, now it is up to him to roll the dice or just get another tire(s).

Well to late now..

I patched my brothers car tire on his FWD 96 regal with one of those walmart plug kits. 10k later and him pushing better than 80mph and no leaks or problems. Was in the center of the tire or so on the front.
