Awesome thread. I've been driving a 99 Runner for the past few weeks that I bought from my folks. I felt like the throttle response was weak and for lack of a better description on the highway the peddle required a little too much travel to maintain speed. I just picked up the slack in my cables and so far... very pronounced difference for the better.

Thanks BB for starting the thread and others for contributing. Happy wheelin.

If you run out of weasel piss you can always use some duck butter! Just adjusted mine & noticed a major difference in throttle response but the trans shifts a lot rougher now.

Can someone elaborate on this operation, please? Is this just a tightening of the throttle cable, that opens the throttle on the throttle body?

What is the OP referring to when he mentions the tranny cable and cruise control?

Sounds like this was a good maintenance operation for a lot of people, just looking for some clarification, b/c my rig could probably use it too.

TIA !

Tightening the cable is all there is to it. To tighten the cable, you loosen the two nuts that hold it to the bracket on the throttle body. Then you spin the nut on the side closer to the throttle body so there is less threading. Next you spin the other nut to snug the cable back up on the bracket.

Less thread on the throttle body side = tighter cable
More thread on the throttle body side = looser cable

The transmission kickdown cable is the cable on the driver side that goes "over" and the throttle cable goes "under". The cruise control cable connects from the passenger side. I wouldn't mess with the cruise control cable unless you think you have a problem though.

For the three cables, my cruise was extremely slack, as well as the pedal. AT cable was fine.

As well as using two 14mm flare nut wrenches, I had to use a pair of small Craftsman robogrips to hold down the end of the sheathing for the pedal cable, keeping it in place, while I backed off one of the nuts to make it lose. Otherwise, I could have cracked the plastic barrel that the nuts travel on. That would have not been good.

Afterwards, both the pedal and CC have a quicker response.

?? Can the kickdown cable be shortened a little bit and the threaded end be replaced?? I seem to have run out of adjustment thread. The PO did me the favor of stripping the last 1/8th inch of threads.
