Smog check ordeals

Hey guys I have a 01 Tacoma v6 and my check engine light was on for a while reading P0420 (catalytic converter) so I cleared the codes and went right in for a test knowing I would fail if CEL was on and it passed everything except malfunction indacator light (CEL) light was off intire time the tech said to drive for awhile and come back then they could read it but while driving the light came on and you can't pass smog with the light on so. Just wondering if anyone knows anytricks to get around this. it passed emissions

They cannot test the ECU right after you clear a code because it resets the readiness monitors. You have to drive for a day or two for them to ready up. If the P0420 came back, you more than likely have a bad cat. Replace the cat and get yourself a code reader that can check readiness status so you'll know when to retest.

get an obd2 scanner that can read live data. You should be able to monitor the o2 sensor voltage and see if its slow or off completely. Use only denso sensors or obd 2 compliant cat.

I have the same code, have for a while.

I think the best option would be to find a not-very-discriminating inspection station that will give you a pass.

Also, the catalytic converter test is the last to be run, so if you time it right, you can take it in when all but 1 of the tests have been run, maybe they will pass you.

I got passed with the code, but I am not in CA. You can try replacing the O2 sensor, it might fix it. If not, I'd say ask around and see if you can find a lenient place.
