How about just wedging a piece of paper or tooth pick in there to keep it tight??

I myself had this problem, mainly opened on the trails and when it was full of change. I took a small piece of velcro and put it on the back of that small lip and then on the opposite side. Kept it closed a lot better.

I disassembled the tray and bent the spring to make the ashtray closer tighter. It defintely helped this out. A new ashtray is 70 bucks at the dealer.

What I ended up doing that worked is remove the two (2) screws that hold the metal frame in place. Once you remove the frame, just pinch the sides together a bit where the plastic slides are. This worked like a champ and with an ashtray full of change it stays put. It's an easy and free fix!

I took mine out and the metal frame to fit some iPod fm tuner in there. The wire was about five-six feet long. and that little light that lights it up looks cool at night. But then mine burnt out. I'm devising a way to fit the gps down there somehow...nevermind about that. Do you really need it is the question.

I took out my ashtray because I never used it. With it removed the green ashtray light actually looks kind of cool shinning down on the lower consol. Now I also have room to mount something down there but haven't decided what to put in the space.

I thought I was the only one with these "problems"; sliding ashtray, seatbelt hanging out the door, moonroof halfway safety switch, and fuel guage going down 1/4 in first three miles. It's all part of some Toyota engineer(s) plan.

Ashtray Parts
I am wondering does anyone know where to get those clips that make the ashtray spring up, I have looked all over my junkyards here to no avail, is there an aftermarket place I can buy them? It is the black metal parts. . .

If I new where mine went I would send it to you haha
but check out tps.toyotaofdallas.com they might have it. it'll take some looking to find it but they have decent prices on OEM parts. I just ordered a new PCV valve and fuel filter from them. Or check with your local dealer
