Sidemarker Success...Template Made, Install Tomorrow

Sweet! After months of sweating this mod, I finally have a template that is perfect! I had originally bought some VW sidemarkers and tried to make a template for them, but it didn't work out. Last weekend, I ordered some clear sidemarkers from Autotoys.com and they arrived yesterday. Well after looking at them today and comparing them, I realized that one of the metal "springs" doesn't spring or give like it's supposed to. When I tried to make the template for the VW sidemarkers a few weeks ago, there were some little plastic tabs on the top and bottom that kept it from sitting flush. I think it was Philly that recommended hitting them with a Dremel to get them off. Well after I realized these from Autotoys were bunk, I headed back to the VW dealer today and picked two of them up again. Dremel worked like a charm and I spent about an hour making the template, but it is pretty close to perfect. There is an extremely small gap between the back of the lamp and the sheet metal I made the template on, so I plan to put an ever so small bead of clear silicon on the back of the lamp when I mount them. Damn, they look awesome!! I'll post some pics of the template I made tomorrow and some pics tomorrow afternoon when I get them put in. Thanks for everyones help so far with this. Later.

Matt

cool. I kinda want to do this as well, but don't trust myself. Did you use <96 Runner>'s write-up?

Hmm, what year did your 2nd gens get side indicators?

I'd be interested to see the template too

Kool. I thought it was me who told ya to knock those tabs off to sit flush... hehe. Good luck. The nibbler I used really distorted the thin fender. Stay away from your template edge a good 1/4"+ and use the dremel or hand file to fine tune.
