Shift Knob Removal

I've ordered some new trim pieces to replace ones the previous owner must have tried to trash because they have a lot of scratches for a rig with only 37k (when I bought it). Both the piece with the PRND2L and the surround immediately around it need refreshing.

I've got an automatic with the grip, not T, handle. Any advice on how to get the shift knob off and on again? The part that worries be is the od/off switch.

If this has already been a topic of a post or a tech session, please don't trash my question just gently guide me to the link

Thanks in advace - Yotatech rocks!

I know on the back of my shifter ('92)you will notice a small rectangle peices of plastic. You pop that out and it should release the shifter button. Also there is one screw at the bottom of the shifter. Its been over a year since i did that and im going from my memory at 2:35am. As for the o/d button i cant remember:confused:

I just had mine apart about an hour ago. I never got the handle all the way off though. There's 2 screws on the bottom of the squishy part on the back. You can get to them in "L". There's no disconnect for the OD switch though, which was perplexing. It goes right into the larger of the 2 harnesses. My guess would be pry the OD switch out with a small taped screwdriver and hope you can unplug the wires from the back of the switch. Again, this is what I FIGURE you'd have to do. If someone knows better, please chime in with a big "hell no" to save his OD switch
There's 3 screws around the base of the PRND2L body that come out, do that, wiggle it around and unhook the OD cable from it's plastic retainer in that unit, and put it in Park for the most slack on the cable. One neat thing I noticed was, if you unplug the smaller of the 2 wiring harnesses, you cant shift from park, not even with the manual shift lock disengage thing. At least I couldn't. Scared the crap out of me for a minute... Plugged it back in and all was fine. go figure.
The plastic piece that says "PNRD2L" is held in by 2 plastic clips. It's kindof hard to explain, wish I had a pic. The part of the clip that sticks out the most is the part you're removing. It looks like you would bend it, but dont. The part to bend is slightly higher up and on the inside. Stick a screw driver in there and it'll come right out.
Hope this helps somewhat...

You can pry the OD switch off (there's a spring that holds it in place). However, once you get it off it's very hard to put back on and worse, it's a solder connection. Only way to remove the OD switch is to cut and resolder.

This was on a 98 4Runner. Not sure if the other models are the same. All I know is I had to relocate my OD switch after mucking around with removing the shifter

Thanks for the advice everybody. Seems like a job to be very careful about :pig: I'll let you know how it goes next weekend when I tackle the thing.

Any additional advice is welcome!
