Shaking hood/weird noise after shutting down

2 threads in one:

Ok when drive high speeds ( 70-90 mph) my hood starts shaking a lot, looks like it's just gonna pop off and fly away. It's kinda freakin me out and my mom too, cuz now she drives it when I'm at school. My bug deflector was doin that but that was only because I had 2 missing screws, after replacing that (7$ at toyota dealership for 4 freakin screws!) it stopped. But now i have massive rubbing marks on the front of my hood.

Next, when I shut down my engine, I get this weird buzzing noise on the driver's side in the upper corner of the engine bay. It's coming from something.......Sounds like my car has asthma and is dying or something

Any ideas for either? Thanks.

ok 3 threads in one:

For you guys with 3rd gen 4runners, how many tow hooks do you have underneath the front of your car? I only have one, thought I lost one last time I went off-road. Thanks.

I dont know about the hooks...cant remember.

The hood shaking is a known problem. There are people out there with kits that cure it. I find it to be caused by the bug deflector. My 98 did it (bug deflector) and my 96 does not (no deflector). I dont know if you had a question about this, I couldnt tell from your post, but just to reassure you, it is a known problem.

As for the buzzing, my truck does the same thing. It has something to do with the emission contol if I remember right. I have grown to ignore it. I dont think there are any performance related issues with it.

Can someone shed some light on the buzzing sound and if there is a quick fix?

I think the buzzing sound y'all are hearing is coming from the charcoal canister. I'm pretty sure it was a problem on 96-98's, and there may even be a TSB for it...I can't remember for sure.

1- The shaking in the hood is probably from the Toyota hood deflector. My dad has a Toyota brand bug shield and his hood shakes, and I have an EGR bug shield and mine does not shake. Mine is a lower profile than his.

2-The buzzing is the charcoal canister, to fix it you can add a part from toyota for around $20. (sorry I don't remember the part number)

3- 96-98's have 1 tow hook and on the other side there should be a "eye" bracket. Not sure about the 99-02's

My hood shakes on the highway too, especially when it's windy out. I have a Lund bug guard. Sometimes it does look like it is going to fly off. It sucks because it can give a passenger the impression that it is a flimsey/cheap vehicle. I car pool to work with a friend who owns a jeep cherokee sport and when I drive the 4Runner, he is amused at the flapping sheet metal. I'll still run his truck over though.

When I bought the screws for my bug deflector from toyota, it also came with bumpers, these stuck to the front of my hood, not letting my deflector touch my hood and made the deflector real sturdy. That stopped the rattling of my deflector, but not my hood.

2nd gen too

I have no bug deflector and my hood has always had a shimmy to it. I've just lived with it.

Now I just watch the road and not my hood...

I even stopped at a rest stop today to make sure the bolts were tightened... which they were. The thing seriously looks as if the next gust at highway speed will blow the thing up and off. Anyone buy the product Jason B posted the link to? Anyone make their own fix? Just curious.

Oh and they also reversed my windshield washer hoses or something because when you pull back on the stick on the column now, the washer goes off on the rear window... but if you twist, the front gets it.... have to figure how to fix that now....grrrr!

make sure you hood stop bumpers are adjusted right, twist them to raise or lower them, make sure the hood fits tight into its latch.

Sounds like the hoses are just attached to the wrong motors. Try switching them, and see what happens. Thats really the only way to mess that system up.
