The Runner is acting funny

last night on my way home i dropped one of may friends off, and noticed my runner was idling at about 150 when at a stop. Its never happened before so when i get to my house, it is still doing it. I turn of my car and start it up again and it just turns over multiple times. It was late and i was tired so i went to bed. THis morning i got up and tried starting it again, it took a few cranks but finally started up and idled at about 150 for a few seconds, and then went to normal. I let it idle in my driveway for about 10 minutes and it has been acting normal. I took the k&N out and it was super dirty, so i am in the process of cleaning it right now. Could the dirty air filter be the problem or could this be something more serious. Need some help guys?

I'm not sure if its something else ... but I did see a thread on here last couple of days about the cleaning oil (I think) for K&N Filters messing with the MAF sensor so be careful and might wanna do a search for that link to check on the oil thing.

His 4Runner does not have a MAF. So it would not be that causing it.

I had some similar symptoms to what you are decribing on my 95 Runner. It has done it about twice in 4 years. I never do find anything wrong though

your 95 does not have a MAF its an AFM (vfm) or something like that. Do NOT remove the sensor with the two screws that is located on the top of your airbox. My buddy did this and it ended up screwing stuff up followed by hours of soldering. Just a caution.
