Roof Rack

Hey everyone, well seeing as my roof rack was damaged during the roll over I need to pick another one up. I know there are several options and was curious if anyone had feedback regarding the rack they chose. I had a Wilderness rack on, however, I was considering the Yakima. Thanks everyone, I appreciate your time!

Mike

Hi Mike, I really dig my Load Warrior by Yakima.

When they first came out, they had hardly any accessories for them, so I had to fab some of my stuff on my own.

http://www.pnw4runners.net/runs/91402/251024.jpg

Here is some of the gear they have out for it now.
Light brackets which I use

Spare tire mount

Axe/shovel mount

And just newly released, a Hi-Lift mount.

I kept bugging their R&D department to build this stuff as I told them I had to make a lot of my own stuff.
They might be also working on a jerry can mount, but I like the one that I have on the rack now.

Anyway, I have had the rack for a few years now, and it looks like brand new, even after sitting outside 24/7.
I have carried lots of gear in it, and even had two tires up on top of it before just thrown into it and covered up with the net they sell.

Mike (Smr4runner) on the board here has one for sale, or at least he did.
I like mine, and won't be switching to anything different.
It fits my needs well.

bummers about the rollover. how did the occupant and the truck fare?

i really like my wilderness rack. i've also had the yakima bars on another rig and won't use them on a 4 wheelin truck again because they break too easy when you try to use the roof rack as a tree slider. My brother has the conferr rack and I think the wilderness is stouter and better looking. I also made a big, stout safari rack for my previous truck (after the run-in with the tree) and the wilderness rack is almost as stout as the custom job.

Just my $0.05.

Yakima, Surco, and Wilderness all have mounts for the various common RR accessories (hi-lift, lights, shovel, spare tire, etc.). So the big questions are price and craftsmanship. No offense to you Yakima owners, but I would never buy anything yakima. I've never seen their basket up close, but they bike and kayak carriers, bars and mounts feel very cheap compared to my Thule stuff. So for me, that leaves Surco and Wilderness. If you want to do it right, go with the Wilderness. The construction/materials is much better than the Surco, but you pay for it, both in price and weight.

With all that said, I have a surco that I've used pretty hard (I think). I haven't had any problems and would recomend one to anyone lookign for a light/medium duty rack. The surco will carry 2 spares no problems, as long as you can get them secured down. One other thing that I really like about the surco is that it's aluminum, so it doesn't rust, and it's [relatively] light. I can put it up there and take it down by myself without much trouble. No ladders required. For me, that's important.

I think the Wilderness looks the best, and seems to be the strongest out there. Although the price in not cheap either. I couldn't really see any damage from your roll over picture. What happened to it?

He he, I know.
I can't keep up with all the posts here anymore.

I use to read just about all of them, but now it's getting really hard.

I can get off for a hour or two to go run chores and come back to 25 to 30 new posts in that time span.
This place is seeing a lot of action

I personally have the Surco.

It is lightweight (won't hurt center of gravity much), aluminum (no rust), but not all that heavy duty.

It comes down to how much stuff you plan to tack onto it.

I love mine, and after 8 years, only complaint is that a small piece of paint seperated on the back.

You might look at the Con-Ferr. Land Cruisers everywhere seem to swear by it.
