I have a 1996 3rd Generation Hilux Surf (4Runner) & I find the stock seats uncomfortable on long journeys.

Being a right hand drive auto vehicle, when i'm driving my right leg is unsupported by the seat as there is no upward adjustment, & it starts to give me a leg & then a back ache.

Has anyone ever fitted an alternative seat, either new or used into a 3rd Gen?

Was it a straight forward swap?

As long as the seats you are looking at will physically fit in the space of the cab (something of similar size to stock), then you can make them work. It will probably require some fabbing of new seat brackets, so that you can mount it to the existing bolt holes in the floor.

The other option is to get a quality aftermarket seat, and the proper bracket to mount it in your Surf.

I'm planning to mount a couple of heated leather Audi seats in my truck, later this year. I will definitely have to make custom brackets to make it work.

 

Recaro made stock seats for the Surf's and diesel 4Runner's for quite awhile, maybe you can find a pair that fits? Or retro fit some 2003+ seats in.
Also i have heard alot of Honda seats fit ok, but i have no personal experiance with them.

 

try adding three washers on each side of the seat frame (front only) that attaches to the floorboard. this will tilt the seat back a little more. you may have to use longer bolts and oversize the hole a bit in the frame to get the bolts to line up w/o cross threading.

i had the leg cramp thing on long trips and this worked for me.

 

Thats a cheap & easy fix & a very good idea.
