Removing Xtra cab cubbies

Has anyone removed the in-cab storage cubbies? I see tons of articles for turning them into sub enclosures but no ones mentioned removing them. I'm about to build a little platform for my dog in that area so he doesn't have to perch on the narrow bench and was thinking how much easier it would be if the floor was level. Well, can't do anything about the transmission hump, but you know what I mean. Wouldn't that be the best way to create sub enclosures too, by removing them and rebuilding that area with a custom box?

i built one in x-cab for my dogs, just fold the seats up, and cut a piece of ply wood to fit tight, then cut 2 legs for the front part closest to the seats. mine worked great. took about 20 minutes to make and i put some foam padding on it with a canvas cover all stapled tight.
