rear window question

hello all, i searched the forum and only found topics related to rear windows rolling down on there own. i have a 97 runner and the rear window stopped working completely yesterday. i checked that the window lock is not on but no luck. it doesnt work from the switch or the key in the rear gate. can anyone give me any tips as to where to start looking? i am going to do the basics today such as test fuses and test if there is power to the switch and motor but just wondering if anyone else can give me any help before i start going to town on the runner

thanks in advance for any help.

sounds like bad relay, motor or ground. maybe fuse?...

my locks/windows stopped working last week, and have yet to trace the problem after looking at all the fuses. i have a feeling it's the relay. only thing that makes sense to me as of yet. more on this later.

good luck!

Did you ever find out what was wrong? My rear window quit working today as well. I checked all fuses under hood, kick panel, and behind the glove box. I also reset the circuit breakers at the kick panel. Sorry for the hijack

thats no problem, i never really got too in to it since i didnt really know where to look. and then about 3 days ago it just started working again. i am assuming i have a bad grond somewhere along the line. guess i will have to wait and see if it happens again to try to diagnose the problem. sorry i couldnt be of more help to you

when it is acting up check the rear defrost and the rear wiper as well. If they are all acting up this is a common problem on the 3rd gen Runners. The window "memory" is kind of screwy and needs reset to full top position, sometimes only possible at the rear hatch keyhole.

If it is just the window itself that will not function it may be a different problem-please understand it is hard to be certain exactly what all is occurring but your descriptions seem most helpful.

Sorry I have to post... if a fuse blows then if the entire circuit is powered from one fuse then the ENTIRE component will not work (IE if the window fuse is just one fuse instead of a LF, RF,RR,LR window fuse separately then none of the windows will work, if separate fuses then just the only component will be inop). Just an argument I had with another tech at work, whome was kicked down to the Lube/Oil line after screwing the same thing up. It sounds to me like your window motor may be on it's way out as if it stopped working and started working again. If you are somewhat electrical savvy then you can get a test light and check the power and ground at the motor. If you are getting both power and ground then the motor is bad. If you are not getting power then work your way backwards to the switches. If you do not get ground then obviously you have a ground problem. A not so technical diagnosis is to tap on the window motor with a small hammer while working the switch, sometimes if the motor is bad then it will work temporarily, but will not be a fix. Just a quick advice though: since I am already in the door panel I like to go ahead and replace BOTH the window motor AND the regulator, just a cheaper repair for our customers. If you've had regulator failure before then more than likely the motor will be on it's way out soon as it's working overtme to overcome the regulator often burning the motor out.
