rear main seal?

my 92 4runner has developed a leak and the "stealer" says its a rear main seal, but it dripping right in the center. he may be right but he says its a big job because he will have to take the engine off the tranny to do this repair.
Has anyone had trouble with an oil leak at the rear main seal and could I do this myself?

Hmmmm, it is a big job.
But before you go back, head to a good auto parts store.
There is some oil you can put in that softens up the seal.

The seal is actually rope. The oil softens it up and also causes it to swell, thus sealing again.

I can't remember the name of it, but I used it on my '68 Chevelle back around '76 or so.
It worked.

I guess ill have to wait on my suspension mods to get the oil leak fixed.

I have the same problem with my 92 4runner the mech swears by this stuff to stop leaks, but i cant remember the name of it right now. I get it every time i get an oil change along with the Lucas oil treatment. That stuff stops the leak everytime.Come to think of it. I think its called StopLeak in a yellow bottle about the size of a fuel injector bottle. One tip he gave me was after you put in the stop leak fluid drive around for 30mins or more and get the engine nice and hot. i will get back to you with the name of the fluid.

Ah yes, that is the same stuff I used back in '76.
I could not remember the name.
In a lot of cases, it works.
