Rear Disc Brake Conversion

As a result of breaking my rear axle last weekend, I started on the disc brake conversion project. Here's my problem.

I pulled out the old axle today and broken bearing. I pressed the new bearing on the axle and everything seemed to fit OK. The bearing went on far enough to put the c-clip on. However, when I mounted the axle, the rotor is about 1/2" to far out for the caliper to mount correctly. How much space should there be between the inside edge of the bearing and the c-clip?

I recall the axle I got, having a collar on it, that may have been part of a previous broken bearing. Since the old axle broke right through this area, I can't tell what was and what was not supposed to be there. Does the caliper go on the front or the back? It seems like it could mount in either location.

If that collar was a remnant of an old bearing, how do you pull the new bearing off? There has to be a trick to this.

Thanks

Gibby

Gibby, you need that collar (bearing retainer) . Also there is a special tool to press of the bearing from the axle . I can press the bearing off for you. you have to bring it to Seattle though. The tool is a long tube with a plate welded on the end that attaches too the 4 bolts on the backing plate Daryl
